If we are taking komisarek we are taking your first
Harsh reality but that is reality
LOL, have fun with that. Taking Komisarek's contract isn't even close to worth a top 5 pick as compensation, nor would the Leafs even entertain it for a split second. Odds are actually quite good that Komisarek plays respectable hockey somewhere with less pressure and a system more suited to his style of play.

actually it is.
I have not read one post (other then a leaf fan) saying that is a good contract
That is already the case. Komisarek's cap hit is $4.5 million, but his actual salary is $3.5 million for the two remaining years on his contract.
To the OP, if Komisark is traded, it would likely be to a team looking to meet the cap floor (not Winnipeg), take a chance with a reclamation project of sorts, and for virtually nothing in return. Forget Stuart, think Komisarek + 3rd for an ECHLer. Komisarek would be purely a salary dump. If the Leafs need to add any more, they'd be better holding on to him, given that our 2nd rounder is looking like it is going to be 34th overall.
Nope.
Leafs give up the 2 most valuable pieces in the deal.
I wouldn't be alone in suggesting that Stuart is more valuable than Colborne to a team right now. Colborne is a nice prospect but he is no blue chipper by any means.
From a Maple Leafs perspective I like it. We free up cap space, get a better overall defenceman and he also has leadership qualities so he can hopefully help address which came into question this past season.
Alternate perspective:
Jets receive a 3rd rounder for downgrading their bottom-pairing defenseman and taking on $2.8M extra in salary.

So you admit that you get the better player and clear cap, and you only offer a 2013 3rd as compensation? Wow.
So we give up a heart and soul player who fights, blocks a tonne of shots, and throws the body, for a pylon and a 3rd round pick.
This is one of THE WORST trades I have ever seen on here....and there have been some bad ones. It you are trolling, well done. If you are not, EEEEEESH!
How would you feel if we threw this out there:
To Winnipeg:
Luke Shenn
To Toronto:
Hainsey

Winnipeg gets some cap space and yadda yadda yadda

If leafs fans are so eager to get rid of Komisarek, why not suggest shipping him back to Montreal for Kaberle? Sure, they both suck, but it might be worth it to see if they can rekindle their old magic in familiar waters. Plus, they both have similar contracts (2yrs, about 4m each, I think), and because of those contracts, no other teams will touch them. So, why not?
It's the best suggestion I've heard in this thread.

I bleed blue and white and I'll freely admit that it's a bad contract. But, anyone who thinks the negative value of the contract with only two years left equates to a 5th overall pick is kidding themselves.
Trolling Leaf fans is fun I'm sure, but please don't get carried away ...

i'm sure he was aware that it's not. But the crappyness of that deal for the leafs, isn't much beyond the crappyness of op's deal for jets.

You HAVE to be joking....

Komisarek has less than no value, and the Jets probably wouldn't trade Stuart for Toronto's second round pick, never mind the third. Just awful.
Ehhhh. Less than no value? He's a useful depth guy in a defensive system. He's slow as hell and has a terrible cap hit, but I doubt his value is actually negative. Minimal? Sure. But negative? Ehhh.

to be honest i agree with this. I think a contract has to be pretty bad, and a player worse, for him to actually have negative value. that beings said, a 3rd round pick is not the difference between the minimal value Komisarek has and the great value stuart has (good on ice, good heart, good locker room, good contract, what more can you ask for?). Not even close.

Oh no doubt. It's a terrible trade. At this point I'm just discussing semantics
