Edmonton-Columbus (NO FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS ALLOWED)

PreambleThis is NOT repeat NOT a "trade up"/"trade down" thread.

It is not intended to be one.

Indeed, it never should be one.

I have friends who are mods here, and if anyone comes here so much as thinking of the first or second overall draft picks - or for that matter, so much as breathes the name of a certain Jackets center prospect who I know you're all thinking of - I swear I shall make sure you never post here again*.

So! Now that we've got that initial unpleasantness out of the way...

To Columbus: Sam Gagner
To Edmonton: Marc Methot, VAN 4th 2012

For Columbus: Gagner is a right-shooting guy who is ostensibly capable of playing as a winger. We badly need right wingers. Therefore, he should be able to fill in on that role in the top-6, and if we have issues with Brass or Johansen he could also fill in as a center if need be instead of, say, Umberger or Prospal. We give up some blueline depth, but we can get by there.

For Edmonton: Methot helps shore up the blueline up there, which might be necessary considering Whitney's injury woes. He's a mobile defensive guy who's capable of being effective moving the puck, but doesn't exactly put up points. Threw in a low pick because Edmonton's present center depth is still potentially such that giving up Gagner might be somewhat awkward. (Of course, Horcoff isn't going away anytime soon...)

Thoughts?

*: Well, okay, I don't actually have that capability; abuse of mod powers just isn't kosher. But seriously, we've got enough of that crap in other threads. I just want to debate this idea, that's all. And I've learned that with certain vocal minorities, the only way to even attempt to dissuade them is with an overwhelming preemptive strike.

I'm not sure the value is there for Edmonton here, i can bet they can get a similar defenseman to methot in free agency without giving up Gagner

I like to counter with this

To CBJ:

Sam Gagner

To Edmonton:

John Moore

Why CBJ does this, well you explained it in your post.

Why Edmonton would do this, they would have their puck moving defenseman that would fit in well with the "kids" and Moore is the type of dman that Edmonton would look at.

I think Edmonton says no simply due to the age difference between Gagner and Methot. I also think Gagner's value is slightly higher than Methot's. Nikitin might be more attractive to the Oilers, but I don't think the Jackets will move him.

Plus Yakupov is going to need someone to center him if RNH plays with Hall and Eberle.

I get why this would be asked for, and it makes sense, but it also makes me flinch.

I think the Oilers say no, because Gagner is more valuable than Methot and while they do need to strengthen their defense, trading Gagner would leave them with Horcoff and Belanger as their 2nd and 3rd line centers.

In all likely hood our lineup will look like this next year

????-RNH-Eberle
Hall-Gagner-Yakupov

Not interested in Methot at 3M to be a 4/5 defenseman. The Oilers already have Smid, Shultz, Sutton, and Peckham in simlar roles. The low pick does nothing for the Oilers. I believe they are finished stock piling picks/prospects.
As much as people rag on Gagner, he's still our #2 centre. Our top 6 still looks better with him in it(the alternative is Horcoff)

Plus the Blue Jackets already have Johansen(who's = to Eberle) and Brassard

Methot doesn't bring anything we don't already have and we have no suitable replacement for Gagner as 2nd C. If it were a guy like Moore I'd be more interested, but I would have to say no to the OP's deal

I know from your past posts you like how Methot plays and think he has value, but personally I don't . Edmonton would pass in my opinion.

To Edm: Tyutin + 3rd

Columbus is rebuilding and Gagner is not that important to Columbus.

He is worth much more than this offer, based on his point totals and age/draft status, and Columbus would be crazy to offer Moore or something similar which is close to his actual value.

I'm sure Edmonton fans will not like it, but I don't want Gagner on the Blue Jackets, at all costs.

Columbus wouldn't trade Tyutin straight up for Gagner let alone adding a 3rd rounder.

You're either off about Tyutin's value or Gagner's value.

Gagner is no more than a small, 2nd line center.

Gagner is a very young player who has potential and has done more than alot of players at that age. I don't think the Tyutin asking price is that unreasonable, its just very unrealistic based on their situation(also including Nikitin and CBJ in general).

In general, I find Gagner ridiculously underrated, even though I don't like him one bit.

This trade is a joke!

I hear Marc-Andre Bergeron is available.

Methot for Gagner isn't even close.a 4th rounder isn't going to make that a better deal either.

You know that the average forward size is 6 feet in the NHL right? Do you know that Gagner is all of 1 inch below that? Gagner isn't big but claims of his softness and size being some kind of major deterent are ridiculously exaggerated. Being a 2nd line center at 22 is far more impressive than you realize, especially considering the team he plays for. And you do know that a 2nd line center is a valuable player right?

That's fine, but a solid defensemen of Tyutin's caliber is an even more valuable player.

Deal for Jenner + a bit for Gagner is likely reasonable, if CBJ wants Gagner. I sure as hell hope they dont.

Don't really even get why Columbus would want Gagner. No trade could be had, because there is not a single decent asset I would give up for him.

i do think Methot will be traded ... possibly at the draft ( especially if Nikitin is re-signed ) ... but i feel he will be traded for a draft pick

not sure what round
