Do you think it will happen "naturally" like when Calgary started it or will the arena's have to give out shirts like in Tampa?

BTW, Winnipeg stole it from Calgary in the 80's... So I heard anyway.
The Whiteout in Winnipeg was copied by the Flames. Next thing you'll try to tell everyone is Calgary invented offense!

I can't believe it took until post #96 for someone to mention that Orange Crush was used by the Denver Broncos in the 70's! About the Flyers orange shirts I think they copied me. I worked at Bucknell in Athletic Communications back in 99-00 and we used extra budget money to make orange shirts to give out to the crowd and encouraged everyone to wear orange. Bucknell is about 2 hours from Philly!

As a Tampa season ticket holder who has attended every home playoff game, I can say that they have NEVER given me a shirt.

Not that i care about people ripping stuff off others, but the sens using "Rev up the Red" is just a wee bit lame.

And by a wee bit i mean a whole lot.

Quote:
The 2006 Stanley Cup playoff drive for the Senators will see the club encourage fans
to 'Rev up the Red'. As part of their playoff theme, fans can show their Senators
support by showing their true colour - red. Fans can Rev up the Red by way of face
painting, wearing a wig or their favourite player's red jersey; anything to help
make Scotiabank Place a sea of red for the playoffs.
How exactly is red the senators colours anyways?

It was been since Scotia Bank took over the naming rights.

The pre-game event is awesome. "Red is the color of blood..." etc.

i dont see why it matters who started it... chances are it wasnt even started in hockey... and i'm sure it was around long before the 80s... didnt the Steelers have the terrible towels before the 80s?... but IMO the point is more than moot... fans wearing their teams colours in the playoffs has become a ritual in almost any sports venue in any league... some get more notice like the white out or the seas of red or the terrible towels... to me its the same as the braves fans doing the tomohawk chop or sharks fans doing that stupid jaws thing... its just a way for the fans to show support for their team... there is no point in critisizing fans for "ripping off" what i think is a great SPORTS TRADITION

You beat me to it.

While I certantly would not claim that the C of Red was an original idea in the world of sports, it most certantly predated the Jets Whiteout (which is still extremely cool), and might have been the first such method of showing support by the fans in the NHL.

Both the C of Red and the Whiteout were born of a great rivalry, however, and I have no problem holding them both up together as equals. The rest of the NHL is just copycatting, especially the Sharks last year and their pathetic misfire with the "Ocean of Teal", and the Flyers who learned the hard way that if they wanted an orange building, they had to give away shirts.

The coolest part of the C of Red though, is that it was not done via freebies. By the time of the finals, almost everyone in the building was wearing a red Flames jersey, netting the NHL a ton of money. Sadly, even most other Calgary teams have even tried to copy it, with the Hitmen even trying for a "camo" look, which failed pathetically tonight, as maybe six people out of 10,000 wore army fatigues.

As far as the Lightning goes, I am pretty sure they did give away T-shirts. Either that, or several thousand Lightning fans spontaneously bought the same shirt for game 7 of the finals...

Regardless, I agree with the 2nd poster in this thread: Not a very useful topic. Not sure what's sadder: that it has gone 5 pages, or that I am responding on the 5th page.

when you associate colours with clubs the "red" teams are Calgary, NJD, Montreal

When i think Ottawa, i think black. Probably because even their red home jerseys feature alot of black along with their third jersey being black.

Anyways this whole promotion seems rather gimmicky seeing as the sponsors are the ones pushing it. but whatever,

Hope we meet in the finals so our C of Red can beat yours :p

So that's why Calgary can't score...all of the other teams stole their offense!

Anyway, by far the worst was the Sabres sea of blue a few years back. First off, blue hasnt been a team color since they switched to the goathead. Secondly, the seats in the HSBC arena are blue, so the effect was more that the arena looked empty. I really hope that this year, the promotional office just figures out whether we should chant the traditional Lets-Go-Buff-a-lo or the more recent, impromptu Lets-Go-Sabres. And that Chris Drury is a playoff God as advertised. Oh, and if the team does lose, let it be from an actual goal, not a fake one!

Uh. Dude. Not to disrespect you in public or anything, but I think this guy knows a bit more than you about Tampa, and what they do.

He said they gave away shirts. Was he there? No. Does he have a reliable source proving this? No.

Just cause you went to every home playoff game doesn't mean anything. I think it's clear, Tampa sucks, and we were only trying to give away special shirts that make the arena look a bit brighter on camera. Stop being a homer.

The sens main color has been red for the past few years. Black used to be their color but not anymore. Besides no-one associates the habs with red, they are the "tricolore" for a reason. The also habs have white alternates as do the flames and devils it doesent make their other jersey any less red. Its not like these teams own the color.

Besides we have an intro based entirely on the color. Beat that.

That was soooo funny. That asshat was actually trying to streak the game. Climbed over the plexiglass in nothing more than a pair of bright orange/red fuzzy socks. When those aforementioned socks hit the ice they (predictably) flew right out from under him, and he bounced his idiot skull offa the ice. And stayed knocked out until they almost had him completely off the ice. Hahahahahaha. Even his mom was embarrased:

Jeez. this thread reminds of back in the day, in Buffalo, they threw Buffalos onthe ice. Every since detroit started throwing the octopus, it has just lost its meaning.
