Eric Belanger + 32nd overall pick

What would the oilers get for this package? How far could they move up in the draft?

Thats tricky,
I don't think Belanger has any real value after his season last year...

Maybee they could move up into the 24 - 25 range.

As Belanger probably has negative value, adding him hurts any deal.

This. You would essentially be placing a value on getting out from Belanger's contract.

It'll be the 31st pick after Jersey gives up their first.

As an Oilers fan we really have little need to move up in the draft. Better off trading that pick and a prospect or something for a proven player.

Actually you couldn't be further from the truth. Belanger's offense disappeared, but his FO, PK and defensive play proved that he still has value and would get you a 2nd round pick. TO would of loved to have him as would a lot of other teams. If he's to be traded, it won't be until the TDL, were he'll have the most value.

Only if you add. On his own he wouldn't be worth a 2nd any more.

Is this your opinion or is this based on facts. A lot of teams would love to get a player with a +55% FO ability, that is solid defensively and is a excellent PKer. Yes Belanger's offensive sucked, but for a playoff team he could be that player that helps you win the cup.

I know Belanger did not produce offensively but as far as his FO, and PK I would keep him as a 4th line player.

Actually the Devils can either give up their 2012, 2013 or 2014 1st round pick, they can decide.

I am thinking that they will forfeit next years or 2014 pick instead of this years.

agreed. the Oilers wouldn't be moving up that much with an offer like that....i would say even lower than 18th, maybe 24th or so? depending on which team we are dealing with and whether or not they need Belanger.

Eric Belanger is signed for 2 more seasons at a cap hit of $1.75 mil, and he totally sucked last year. At this point he's a 34 year old 4th line center who rarely hits and who isn't very big, he really doesn't have much to offer except faceoff wins. I have to think he has roughly no trade value, for 2 years at a $1.75 mil cap hit you can probably sign a better 4th line center through free agency.

To put his value into perspective, compare him to Steckel. Steckel is a faceoff specialist too, but he's better at faceoffs, much bigger, much younger (was 29 when he was dealt to the Leafs last year, Belanger is 34), has a significantly lower cap hit ($1.1 mil vs. $1.75 mil), and had the same amount of time on his deal (Steckel had 2 years left when dealt, Belanger has 2 years left now). Steckel was traded for a 4th round pick, Belanger is probably worth even less, like a 5th-7th round pick. That won't move you up much at all.

don't forget that Belanger was signed specifically to win faceoffs, so we got our money's worth there, but he was also expected to provide some offense, but didn't.

Next years draft is supposed to be better and their pick will be 29th or 30th this year. Why would they give up what will likely be the higher pick in the better draft?

depends on whether or not the Bruins or Rangers or Pens or Panthers...teams like these have a need for Belanger or not. trading up from #32 to #28 or #24 is no big deal to me.
