its a big assumption saying Suter will go to the Wings just because Lidstrom is gone

I think he resigns in NSH. they have a good thing going and he's a country boy.........stay put

He still might sign with Detroit, we don't know only Suter knows. But if you don't have the Wild as one of the top contenders your not looking at the big picture.
Being able to choose to live and work in a different city than your in-laws? Priceless.

There's not much they really can do but cross their fingers and hope that Kronwall and Smith can manage to fill at least half of the giant Lidstrom-shaped hole in their roster.

The market is weak this year, and it'll be even weaker if Parise and Suter stay where they are, which IMO is starting to look like the most likely scenario.

I love it. People don't seem to learn from their previous mistakes.

2001 - "Wings will not be great anymore! They are too old!"
2006 - "Wings don't have their HOF team anymore! They will miss the playoffs soon! They can't wn without Yzerman!"
2012 - "Red Wings will miss the playoffs! They can't win without Lidstrom! They will finally be bad!"

Someone bump this thread in May of next year for me to get a good laugh at.

It's a little different this time man. Lidstrom was still a top 5-10 defensemen in the game. Yzerman was barely able to walk when he retired and had already started passing the torch to Datsyuk and Z.

I'm sure much of that is due to being across the country separated from his family in San Jose.

Let's see what happens in the offseason and how some of these prospects like Smith, Nyquist and Tatar develop over the summer before we say with such certainty that they will have a drop off. Yes, the best players on the Red Wings are getting old but some their most important players are entering/in their prime years (Kronwall, Helm, Filppula, Franzen, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Miller, Quincey, Ericsson, Howard). A prospect or two steps up, along with some new blood and the Red Wings could be back on top.

Yes it is very possible that they could drop off and even start battling with Edmonton every every year for a lotto spot, but hasn't history taught us otherwise? That we shouldn't call the Wings dead until they are actually dead.

He's already tried to bring a bad team into mediocrity and into the top echelon. Why would he want to start all over again? If he leaves Nashville he isn't going to Minnesota.

Who is this Lidstrom guy? I heard they picked him up from 35+ beer league hockey?

Haven't read all the posts but I'm setting the over under for 'you can't replace Lidstrom' at 15
