Gotta go with Benn. Hockey IQ and defensive abilities sets him apart.

I'm not sure there's anyone in the NHL who's clearly faster than a healthy Matt Duchene...

Hagelin?

Benn is definitely better right now, but anyone who says "AINEC" for either one will have a tough time explaining themselves.

Oh, I agree with you on this, Benn is a fantastic young player, who has plenty of untapped ability himself and is the much more complete player right now, I just thought it silly for anyone to argue for speed and skating as reason for anyone to be "AINEC" better than Duchene, because when healthy, Duchene's in that top tier of skaters in the NHL.

I mean, that skating, his hands and solid frame alone got him to the allstar game last year. His instincts are just solid, he doesn't have a great understanding off how to use his abilities to make his team-mates better, he's been an inconsistent defender in the NHL, he starts seasons slowly and gets down on himself, he forces things way too much when he's struggling, he puts too much pressure on himself when things aren't going right and his shot needs to get more precise...and yet, he's still been a dynamic player in the NHL when he's been put in the right situations and is still so young that seeing his understanding of the game still growing shouldn't surprise anyone. Gripe away at the mental side of his game, but there's certain things you just can't legitimately critique Duchene on unless you've only seen him skate at the end of this season when he had a banged up knee on one leg and ankle on the other.

Benn is, as well. They're both amazing skaters.

Benn got to the ASG too, if you don't remember. Even with a burst appendix two weeks before.

I guess you could say Benn is further ahead in his development at this point.

Seriously, I'm lost

I'll pick one out of a hat and be happy with whatever I get. I'd give a limb or two to have either one on the Rangers.

Even considering how they fit the team it's a tough choice, because Richards and Duchene would give us incredible center depth, but a Benn-Richards-Gaborik line would be so much sex.

I can't pick.

No doubt, I'm not crapping on Benn here, just the notion that skating should be used as a reason that it AINEC for either player.

That last sentence I think is the key here. Duchene is still two years younger than Benn, i think it's just two, and so it makes sense that Benn's game is more well-rounded and he has better "hockey IQ" right now. It's why it's hard for me to pick even though I do think Benn is the better player right now. Duchene's really still just figuring the NHL out, and while Benn's still learning himself, he's a more developed player at the moment and so I think Duchene will be able to close the experience/wisdom gap more easily than Benn can expand it.

I had take Taylor Hall and Mike Grabner over Matt Duchenne with their unmatched explosiveness and speed.

Benn is primarily a center, too.

Is he? I know he was LW when he came up, I wasn't aware he had experience at center as well. Now both can play wing or center, that makes it even tougher.

I think he is better at center tbh. Much more dominant.

Jamie Benn right now is clearly a better player in my mind.

It will be closer in the future for sure but it's Benn for me right now. Two very good players

It's not like Benn is slow... He easily beat Doughty in a breakaway and has given himself several breakaways with speed alone.

Benn isn't in Duchene's class when it comes to skating.
