"Marvin Degon has developed into an exceptional college defenseman over his four years here at UMass," said Massachusetts head coach Don Cahoon. "He is ready to become a professional player at the highest level. His competitiveness and skill level rank among the best players that I have ever been associated with."
I used to work for Don Cahoon at Princeton and I believe he has a great eye for talent. Jeff Halpern was one of his 'finds' as well as getting the best out of Thomas Pock at Umass.
At UMass, he was a terrific offensive defenseman (though he played both ends of the ice quite well). He's got great puck skills and moves vey well with it too. Has good vision and can make really nice tape to tape passes. He likes to join the rush and doesn't have a problem finishing plays (read that score goals). He's not a overly physical defenseman, which may be his most glaring weakness. Overall, I think he's a wonderful addition to the Rangers and I wish him all the best with organization. He'll certainly be missed at UMass.
