unless they planned on trading the pick, this draft lottery may have saved the BJ's from themselves

the hockey gods may have just prevented them from drafting another supposedly awesome Russian forward with the first pick and now maybe they will do what they should have done with their previous high picks and draft a stud defenseman they can develop into a true number one in a few years.

Agreed. When your team scores 3 or 4 goals on a major penalty in the first period of a game, lead 5-2 midway through the second, and lose 6-5 with 8 seconds left on the clock, offense doesn't seem to be the issue.

No suprise here, but the NHL told the PA that it wants to end or modify the actual CBA that expires on September 15th.
https://twitter.com/#!/RenLavoieRDS/...70888838496256

Also tweeted was "If no notice was given by either party, the CBA would have remained in effect for another season." Of course, we already knew that.

Not really a good idea with Fehr on the other side of the table IMHO.

I want to say "they couldn't be that stupid"... but then I remember who we're talking about.

I love how Fehr has become a mystical figure.

having Fehr in no way changes the realities that will drive the CBA.

Players would be absolutely stupid to force another lockout... they are doing VERY well and the cap keeps skyrocketing.

Owners cant make the 'whole league is broke" claim this time.

both sides will talk tough, then both sides will give a little and the deal will get done.

We might miss a little of camp but I'd be shocked at their mutual idiocy if any of the reagular season actually gets cancelled.

Big sticking points the owners want to take money out of the players share currently at 57% and the players in no way will want to relinqish any of that and if they do they will want other concessions like UFA age etc is my guess. So in all honesty this is going to end up being a pain in the ass for both sides but the fans mostly. The other thing is the NHL says the cap could reach 70MM this season under this CBA well GM have only that framework to manouver under so what happens if they get working on it and the owners get a rollback on the cap back to say 60MM. I see these as some serious sticking points with this CBA.

Every time I have been involved in a negotiation I will tell the other party that there is no way I will do X, Y or Z, and every time I will do at least one or two of those things if it comes down to it.

The players union is going to stand to their position of not wanting to relinquish any of the players' stake in the league revenue up until the point they back off of it a little. If they say "well... we can give up a little" before talks even begin it puts them at a disadvantage in the negotiations.

This is why reading quotes in the media from parties about to be involved in a negotiation can be one of the worst ways to go about predicting what will happen when the negotiations actually begin. Both sides will stand firm in print, and both sides will give and take at the table.

Either way, it's going to be a busy summer over on the Business of Hockey board.

Good luck moderating that board and the CBA thread in general over there.

Haha I'm not sure if alcohol would help or hurt when modding over there this summer. I'm thinking I'll just let Fugu take care of it all, and then "show up late". "What'd I miss, guys?!"

Vokoun to the Pens for a 7th. (I'd give you the first source but it's been posted on NHL.com)

Question becomes will they sign him?

Fluery + Vokoun is 7 mil per though, not an insane amount to spend on a goalie tandem.

With the knowledge that Vokoun was one of the goalies on the market this summer, this is good news for Lindback's value. Not huge, but it helps.

Right now, what we need is Josh Harding to get traded to and signed by a team like Pittsburgh that is not really desperate for a new goalie (AKA not Toronto, Tampa, New Jersey (depending on Marty's retirement), Columbus, or Edmonton). With Harding and Vokoun off the market, most teams' 1 and 2 options will be gone, making Lindback super, super valuable. I'm hoping for a bidding war between Toronto and Tampa over him.

I know he isnt the best comparable, but look at what Varlamov got from Colorado. Lindback isn't nearly as proven as him, but Varly got a 1st and 2nd becuase the Avs were desperate. Lindy could at least hold the value of 2nd, if not more.

Some teams I think aren't being talked about enough in goalie trade talks:

New Jersey: 2 goalies over 40....
Edmonton: Dubynk probably isnt the answer.
Florida: Do they want to rush Markstrom? We'll see.
Calgary: If Kipper is traded, they'll need someone.
Chicago: Crawford/Emery isn't cutting it
San Jose: Something isn't working there. They need change. We'll see if they feel comfortbale with Niemi

Some teams that need a backup for sure next year:

Boston: Thomas gone, they need a #2
Detroit: No depth behind Jimmy Howard
Anaheim: Dan Ellis is gone, and they brought in a Euro. Do they want insurance?
Winnipeg: Pavelec is really good, but he could use a better 1B guy

Good move by Pittsburgh in signing Vokoun. Fleury was so horrible in that series against Philly they absolutely need a guy who could start if he falters not just a good backup. Vokoun gets on a cup contender so works on both sides.
