I thought he was going back to Finland? I doubt he ever returns to NHL if he leaves now.

Same here for both. Better money in KHL, though.

I hope he goes to the KHL. He needs to play couple full seasons with good icetime. After that we'll see if he has 1 more shot for NHL.

He's a pretty solid PP guy, would do well there.

Decent player, should do well over there.

Could still do alright over here too on the 3rd pairing, but spent most of the year in Q's doghouse for no apparent reason.

He wasn't bad this year. He can play in the NHL, but I imagine there's better money for him in Russia.

Good luck to him, if he goes.

Not surprising. He never impressed me. The Hawks won't miss him much either. He barely played.

That's a weird one. Sandford finally gets a second chance in the NHL after two and a half years in the minors and he bolts for the KHL. I guess the Jackets told him he would not be back next year which would be weird since he was decent or better for them last season. I guess the lure of a bigger pay day in Russia was worth it.

Weird. I thought Sanford was one of the better back ups in the NHL.

Yeah, Sanford has pretty much established himself as an "elite #3" in the NHL, the kind of guy teams will try to sign as their superstar AHL starter and injury fill-in, at least (if they don't have a stud prospect in the pipeline), with a minor league salary that tops the re-entry threshold, like the last couple years at $200k+. I would have liked him back in Hamilton on such terms.

Grar. I was hoping to keep Sanford.

Interesting that they sign Sanford on the same day that Vokoun (who was rumored to be signing with Lokomotiv) is traded and signs with Pittsburgh.

Sanford actually got the starters job as Mason just kept being Raycroft 2.0 (wanted to gloat and mention I called this happening during his rookie year), but according to their beat writer, CBJ wanted him on a 2 way contract again if they were going to re-sign him

Signing a 2 way contract after winning the starting gig and doing well isn't something any career backup is going to be willing to sign. He probably felt lowballed and thought with how Vokoun is getting very little interest there may be no market for him on a 1 way deal

It really is. I thought Sanford might end up in Pittsburgh and Vokoun in the KHL. Oh well, I guess it worked out for both of them.

Sanford started strong, finished weak, and his overall numbers were quite mediocre. Plus he seems to have a fairly significant back issue, which you'd suspect isn't going to get better with age. Not too surprised he bolted to the KHL if he was sick of the prospect of going back to the 'A'.

Surprised Sanford wasn't re-signed by the Jackets. All indications showed they wanted to keep him as at least a backup for next season. Like a previous poster said, taking the two-way might have been what the issue was. If it were between that and seeing how the goalie market already has looked like in previous offseasons, it's no surprise he left before July 1st and took the money overseas.

It'll be interesting to see what Columbus does with goaltending now. They're going to need to bring someone in. Mason could be gone too over the summer. They still have York and Hunwick, and those two both belong in the minors. Dekanich and McElhinney will be UFAs. Their NHL goaltending looks pretty bleak right now. Something should happen in free agency or trades. At the very least they get a veteran backup and give Mason one more chance.

Goaltenders:
Curtis Sanford (Can)
Vitaly Kolesnik (Kaz)
Sergey Gaiduchenko

Defence:
Sami Lepisto (Fin)
Staffan Kronwall (Swe)
Vitaly Vishnevsky
Dmitry Korobov (Blr)
Evgeny Korolev
Mikhail Pashnin

Forwards:
Viktor Kozlov
Mikelis Redlihs (Lat)
Roman Lyuduchin
Sergey Plotnikov
Alexey Kalyuzhny (Blr)
Yury Petrov
Alexander Chernikov
Egor Averin
Maxim Trunev
Dmitri Klopov

And a whole team of young 19-22 y/o guys that were claimed from other KHL teams of signed from somewhere else after the crash, including such interesting players as Daniil Apalkov, Timofey Tankeev, Anton Klementyev.
Lokomotiv is also rumored to be in talks with Andrei Kuchin of Sudbury Wolves and is one of possible destinations of Alexander Semin if he isn't signing in the NHL this offseason.
Lokomotiv just drafted 2nd overall Finnish center Alexander Barkov as well and may be the place where Barkov will play his pre-NHL draft year.
