Caps-Red Wings

Just read a post from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal saying that there is a rumor that the Wings & Capitals are talking about a trade.

There are even some intriguing trade proposals, the most interesting on the web having the Washington Capitals trading Mike Green and centre Brooks Laich to the Red Wings for Johan Franzen, Darren Helm and Kindl.

Take from it what you will. I don't think its that bad of a trade though. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...323/story.html

Stolen/taken from this proposal:

Which was taken from another.

Weak, Jim.

Yeah, I can't really see the Wings being interested at that price. As good as Green is offensively, some view him as a liability defensively, which is what we don't need in lieu of losing Lidstrom and Stuart. Also, Laich is a good third line center, but that is what the Wings want Helm to turn into - and Helm is WAY cheaper. We don't need to be paying our 3C $4.5mm.

I think if they are really talking trade, it is for Semin's negotiating rights.

How about just a straight up ufa rights swap? Semin for Hudler?

So Matheson reads HfBoards?

Anyway how reliable is that guy?

I don't see DET giving up on Helm. He's speed was needed at playoffs and it showed.

I think Detroit's interested in Semin's rights.

Don't think moving Green would be a good thing for Washington unless a top pairing D was going back.

It says in the article its a proposal from the web FFS.

And I would sincerely hope McPhee is not dumb enough to do something like this and has at least seen Franzen play hockey in the last 3 years.

I'd like to decline this proposal on behalf of the "No More Wideman" camp.

Wouldn't mind picking up Helm and Kindl though. Just don't like the giant gaping hole it leaves in the Caps' top 4 D.

Green would be a good defenseman if he could play defense.

Red Wings need to avoid Green and Semin and go after Suter and Parise. USA players are the way to go because they have heart.

Well then, "some" haven't watched Green in the past two seasons.

The Green/Laich for Helm/Franzen/Kindl trade was already exposed as an awful deal for the Wings.

They'd get Laich to replace Helm as a top PK guy... Except Helm will get paid half as much and is three years younger.

They'd get Green, who they don't need because they already have an offensive-minded defender coming up in Smith, who is three years younger and will get paid WAY less.

So basically they lose Franzen to get an older, more expensive version of Helm, and Green, who they don't need because they can fill that role from within.

It makes zero sense.

And I'd prefer we stay away from Semin too.

I don't think he's untouchable.

But it'll take a hell of a lot better trade than that to get him.

Yeah to get Helm you are talking about a star/potential star coming back. He's far to valuable to the success of the Wings. I think he is one of the best 3rd line centers in the league and when he lpays there, he is undoubtably the best 4th line center. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Howard, Helm. Those are the players that the Red Wings will not be moving.

Pathetic that he stole that from HF - it wasn't even a rumor here, but a proposal someone made up.

So that's why half the Wings fans in that thread said they'd do it?

Way to leave out the fact that Helm has only once reached 30 points, while Laich has consistently been between 40 and 60 while playing a shutdown role. Or that Laich has 3 inches and 20 pounds on Helm. Clearly the only thing that matters is age and potential.

Again, you don't seem to be distinguishing between potential and current ability. Mike Green is a top pairing defenseman right now. Smith has a decent shot at being one several years from now. Put all your chips on Suter if you want, but this is an old team with a closing window, and if the only player taking Lidstrom's spot is a first year Smith then the Wings are in trouble.

It's usually the boxcar stats that people look at to assess a trade, but in this case, you've completely ignored them in favor of ages and cap hits. An interesting way of looking at it, but not a smart one.

Anyway, the Caps wouldn't do this. Trading Green without a top 4 defenseman coming back would leave their defense in shambles, and might even prompt them to bring back Wideman (shudder). Trading him without even filling our biggest hole - 2C - is utter lunacy.

Are we thinking of the same player? Because I'm thinking of a 25 year old forward whose career high is 32 points. How can he possibly be so valuable to the organization that it takes a star or potential star to pry him away?

Dear DRW fans,
Don't you think Green is just better (yes, better) than Franzen and you have to compensate with something? I thought about it after that topic came to an end... and changed my mind on Franzen vs Green.
