The Jackets Need Goalies

The Blue Jackets are going into the summer with one thing at the front of their mind.

They need goalies. According to today's Puck Rakers blog, at least three of them to be precise. Howson has made it clear that he is not content to move forward with Mason as the #1.

(Anybody heard from Jean-Francois Labbe lately?)
http://www.bluejacketsxtra.com/conte...lie-reset.html

Here's the breakdown:
Mason is out as the #1. He could come back in the capacity of back-up or in the AHL. Him leaving the organization and trying to start anew elsewhere is the most attractive option, but at his cap hit he will be hard to trade.

Sanford just signed over in the KHL and WILL be playing over there.

Allen York should not be forced to play in the NHL this year. He needs time to develop.

Now as for potential guys:

Boston: Tim Thomas is taking next year off. He's out.

Pittsburgh: Vokoun just signed for 2 years in Pittsburgh. He's out.

Vancouver: Potentially has a goaltender available be it Luongo or Schnieder. Luongo is not an ideal choice given his age and length of contract. If Columbus is looking to be a young team, he doesn't fit very well.

Minny / UFA: Harding is potentially starter material. He has been solid when playing, but his injuries are off-setting. Can he handle being a #1 for a full season and play 60 games? Is he reliable?

LA: Bernier may be available, but the cost is rumored to be fairly high. It's said that the Jackets are lukewarm on him and didn't really pursue him during Carter trade talks.

Nashville: Lindback may be available, but would Nashville want to deal within the Central Conference?

Washington: May make Neuvirth available, but by trading away Vokoun I think a tandem of Holtby/Neuvirth is likely.

Also, there are guys like Clemmenson, Biron, and Gustavsson.

The Jackets may entertain trading their pick away or look for a goalie as a piece in a trade for Nash. If the 2nd is involved, it is logical to assume the type of goalie coming back for it will be young and already an established starter.

Can HFBoards come up with a scenario that fills the Jackets needs?

Luongo is still available.

Schneider too, but you won't like the price

As a stop gap for 2,3 years, Martin Biron could be a good pick-up for Colombus. Solid veteran who has been a starter in the past.

Winnipegs Chris Mason's comments sounded like he'd prefer to sign somewhere where he has at least a chance to win a starters job. I could see him taking an offer from columbus if this truly is their situation.

Ive watch him alot since Patrick Roy called him the best prospect goalie hes ever seen, and he really is good, i have no idea what Islander fans would want however

My only worry is that Chris Mason isn't the same player he was in St Louis a few years back. He's solid, but not over the top, and I view him as a 1b/2 goalie to platoon with a younger starter.

Then there's the problem of a Mason/Mason combo in net

I'd like it if the Jackets gave Gustavsson another chance and he succeeded.

We could go back to the discussion we were having for Nash to the Island.

Sign Desjardins, hes been solid in the minors, and he was good in his little NHL stint, sign him ASAP, and then trade Mas-backup

Not sure how this has anything to do with Frederik Andersen but he'll be eligible for free agency soon and will certainly turn around a franchise like Columbus at a cheap cap hit.

Howson has the chance to redeem himself as a GM by making this signing and not having to trade away Nash.

Andersen is still signed with Frölunda. I thought he was committed to playing in Sweden this season, but Frölunda has 4 goalies under contract. Perhaps they assume Andersen and Nashville's Magnus Hellberg are coming to over?

Andersen has stated that he wants to play for Frolunda for another year, however his agent wants him to be an NHL starter as soon as possible.

Frederik will listen to his agent

Al Montoya would be a good fit for CBJ until they draft or aquire thier future #1..AWhen he is healthy he can steal games and hes still young...

As for Poulin, he is the Islanders future #1, You would have a better chance asking for Nilsson or Koskinen...

Cedrick wasn't solid in the minors, he was outstanding, he is a clear cut NHL talent IMHO, but he has some serious injury concers. If I'm Howson I would sign either him or Harding and play them alongside Dekanich, IMHO Mason has to go.

What ever happens, I'd like to see Mason end up in Phoenix. Burke did wonders with Smith.

I think a veteran backup who could push Mason would be good.

Someone who could play 30-50 games a year depending on Masons performance.

Khabibulin, Mason, Giguere, Hedberg maybe, Clemmenson.

Just thinking cheap options.

Apparently Andersen thinks he will be an NHL starter in the immediate future. That's a pretty good indicator of his summer plans.
