he will be kept, in a couple of years, Martinez will be worth too much money for the Kings to afford to pay him to be a bottom pairing dman, so they will be forced to trade him and Hickey would hopefully slot in nicely as a cheap pmd replacement

Yeah, I wouldn't be shocked if Martinez was maybe packaged with Bernier this offseason for a young-ish scoring winger. I've seen Hickey a handful of times in preseason games and he always stood out in a positive way. Martinez has been solid all year but he certainly isn't a world beater and I think Hickey can slot in for him and the Kings wouldn't miss a beat
Hey, just wondering what his value to the Kings is at the moment.
His entry level deal is coming to an end and he will be waiver eligible next.
Any idea what the Kings plans are for him this summer.
As a Flames fan and him being from Calgary, id love the Flames to give him a look.
Yeah, this will force him to move or someone else to. It will be interesting. I think DL wants to keep him as one of his pet projects, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I expect a trade will happen eventually where we pick up a forward for a D-man again. If Penner and Stoll aren't kept, we will likely want to make a move for a 3rd line two-way type of forward, so a deal could happen there. Perhaps something with Curtis Glencross?
Why did he not live up to the expectation you think? I assume ya'll been following him more closely than others... I like to re-visit past drafts and this guy was 4th overall and hasn't played and NHL game yet... and it was 5 years ago

Suderi's contract is up after next year, I hope LA holds on to AMart.

Passed over by other prospects and early injuries.

I don't think Martinez is expendable at all. He is playing like a 2nd pairing PMD, and those are in short supply around the league. He is the reason Sutter can play the same transition gameplan through every line

I hope so to, i just don't see it happening because he will deserve to be paid a decent chunk of money, and the Kings may not have the cap space to fit him in. Unless he really blossoms and can be moved up to play alongside Doughty on the top pairing in 2014-2015
I like Hickey - I still hope he turns in to "some kind of valuable asset." It's not looking too good however.
I liked what I saw of him at camp, but he obviously wasn't good enough to make the team... otherwise, he'd be here.
I still contend that Voynov was brought up over Hickey due to cap concerns, with Hickey's cap hit $500,000 higher. Obviously it worked out great, but I think if Hickey had had the lower cap hit, things may have played out differently. Even posters on this board said that through camp, Hickey and Voynov were pretty much neck-in-neck. Considering how Voynov has played this year, Hickey may be more than NHL ready as well.

He seemed to be a better PP QB in the preseason games I saw. He never put up the offensive numbers that Martinez did in the AHL but the penalty killers seemed to respect him more by not attacking him and getting shredded by a pass...again, very small sample size though. I think he still has a future with this team
We will likely keep him to see what happens with Amart and Voynov.

After suffering from injuries the first two professional seasons, Hickey has played the last two full seasons at Manchester, and from reports, has been a top player on the blue line. He is a solid PMD, who made the all star team this year (something Voynov accomplished the year before), lead the team in plus/minus at +16 on a team that scored and allowed the same amount of goals, (comparison Muzzin -3,Deslauriers -14)
he is an excellent compediter and skater. His knock is his size and strength. After only full two seasons, it would be foolish to give up on him, unless the staff does not believe he has the physical ability to play in the NHL.

Voynov played a bit better in the preseason and had played much better than Hickey in Manchester in 2010-11. Hickey didn't deserve it last year.
Right now, I think Hickey will start out 2012-13 as the 7th defenseman as he would have to go through waivers to go to Manchester next season.
