So if Carkner isn't returning (as rumoured) and if Kuba isn't returning (as rumoured), we're at:

xxx - Karlsson
Cowen - Gonchar
Phillips - xxx
xxx

Borocop
Wiercioch

I don't see Cowen being thrust into a top-2 role on the backend just yet. He still needs to polish up his defensive game more, albeit that's not a knock on him, most young defencemen do. If Kuba is gone, it just means we're signing some other UFA. Ideally we can land a 2/3 guy who can replace Kuba's minutes for this upcoming season and - when Cowen is ready and Gonchar is gone - replace Gonchar as our #3. A guy like Jackman might suit the bill.

The depth positions are easier to fill. Could fill the spots internally by re-signing Gilroy to be the #7, and leave the 6th slot open for Borowiecki and Wiercioch. Could also go UFA route and sign... well anybody.

I said a few months ago that I think the Sens should go after Barrett Jackman. He's not the best UFA out there but he's a solid defensive defenseman that could protect Karlsson.

I agree, Suter is going to be the sought-after commodity, Jackman will be both more affordable and more realistic. I agree that he could complement Karlsson well, maybe he could even 'groom' Karlsson to be used to playing with a shutdown guy for when Cowen is ready to make the jump to the top-pair.

That rumor was started by our "crack" media team (emphasis on crack). I think the team knows what they have in Carkner, he likes it here and he isn't looking for a payday. I have a feeling he'll sign a very affordable contract and, being the consummate team player that he is, won't grumble moving between the 6th and 7th D spot.

Don't think he won't get rewarded for standing up for Karlsson against Boyle like he did. Murray is loyal.

Fair enough. If he does stay he's still the 7th D, it'd just mean Gilroy is more likely to be gone instead.

this news makes me happy. the only way he was probably re-signed is if he took a one year deal, which kuba won't accept. and i don't blame him, i'd look for a longer term contract too.

i guess trent was wrong again.

You mean Marty Straka isn't the only person with a Kuba jersey?

I hope they go the trade route. There isn't a defensemen available via free agency, aside from Suter, that I would support the Senators giving 3+ years and 4+ million per to and I imagine that's what they'll all be asking for.

I'm dissapointed. Would have liked to have hom back on a 1 or at the most a 2 year deal around 3.5million/year.

I guess Kub's agent beleives that he is going to cash in. Not a good move with an expiring CBA if you ask me...

And for those beleiving that Cowen is going to step in and fill Kuba's spot I highly doubt it. From January on he played 3rd pairing minutes...

Any teams in tight against the cap with some talented younger defensemen?

With what some people are saying about the cap possibly rising to $69-70 mil (pending new CBA discussions that might change this, etc...), I don't think anyone's up against the cap this offseason.

Looking at the other options that are out there, it's safe to say it would have been best to keep Kuba around for a year or two. But I guess Kuba wants 3 or more years with a raise? Too bad. There really isn't anyone else available that can play with EK at the same level besides Suter. Gotta hope he wants to play with him so bad that he signs with us this summer!

It'd be nice if they both played, so we'd have 2 Polaks on the back end. Poles are renowned for defending :p

And the names are actually phoentic in Polish, so it's not hard to spell!

Wiercioch = Vyer-Chyoh
Borowiecki - Boro-vtets-kee

After a quick glance at upcoming UFAs:

Left side?
Bryan Allen, Francis Bouillon, Jason Garrison, Hal Gill, Matt Carle, Carlo Colaiacovo

Right side?
Justin Schultz, Cory Sarich, Michal Rozsival, Pavel Kubina

Theoretically and realistically:

Bouillon-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Sarich
Borocop

I would argue that Barrett Jackman isn't better than Johnny Oduya, though. Also that he's unlikely to leave STL.

If Francis Bouillon is our top pairing defenceman, we're in trouble.

Bouillon on our top-2 and we might as well forfeit the season.
