Well it's good you want to finish the story on normal, since you don't have a choice.
In Diablo, the increasing difficulties are only unlocked once you beat the previous difficulty with that character. You play Nightmare starting as a lvl ~30, Hell starting at lvl 50, and Inferno starting at lvl 60.
What the hell is the hardcore characters at lvl 10 crap then?
Just checked in game...why do they even waste time programing that kind of ****?
I haven't finished the game yet, freaking work, but I was pretty upset that Blizzard didn't reprise the best video game music of all time for New Tristram.

Hardcore is a mode where when you die, you die forever. They just don't want anyone who hasn't played the game at all starting on hardcore. Once you get a character to lvl 10, hardcore is unlocked.
Great, great game. I think the Caesar games are good, and this one uses the Caesar III engine, I think. This was the game in the city building series that I thought the best, though.
Man, does **** get real on Hell. Nightmare was a lot tougher than Normal, and there were more than a handful of rare spawns that gave us trouble. But it feels like 50% of the rare spawns on Hell have some vicious combo of attributes (or just immune minions + anything) that cause us to wipe constantly for a while. Stuff like frozen + plagued + vortex really suck. They pull you in, freeze you, then make you stand in their AoE damage.
I like 'Teleport + Fast + Illusion + Whatever' more................. I hate inferno.
You guys probably already know about this but there's been a lot of people getting hacked...... so make sure you guys get that authenticator if you haven't done so already.
I got to 50 with my second HC char (first died at 42), and I'm still on Nightmare in Act 3
Here's a great Diablo video, btw
That is a pretty damn good representation of me trying to solo inferno with my monk. 90% kiting.
HC is going to be impossible on inferno without perfect gear and a ranged class. Even then, you'll likely run into a teleporter vortex jailer with invulnerable minions and die.

Yeah, heard that from multiple people. I think I'll stay in Hell until 1.03 patch (if I manage to get there in the first place) and maybe poke my nose into Act I of Inferno. Know a pair of guys stacked on vita and res who were one-shot by Lacuni in Act II.
Finished D3 act 2 last night....first time through (with my Demon Hunter now level 28) and I had only died 2 times the whole way up till that fight......died another 3 on Beliel fight....finally some challenge.
Good mindless mouseclicking fun...

Difficulty curve is badly balanced: Normal is a breeze with a pair of challenges, NM is finally entertaining, Hell has some extreme packs and Inferno is outright ridiculous until you've spent 10+ mln. on gear.
Begun my venture into hardcore Hell, completed the Shattered Crown quest. Had a rough start, cause my first champion pack was Mortar, Fast, Frozen. Level 53 monk, 31k HP, 2k DPS, 30% resistance to all, 40% reduced damage, 25% dodge.
My monk has 36k hp, 170 resist all, 60% dmg reduction and 30% dodge. He gets 3-shot killed by regular minions on act 2 inferno.
$10M on gear might be conservative.
Of course I meant $10 mln. on HC AH, because SC one is totally messed up right now. Blizzard needs to find more gold and item sinks for softcore players.
The HC monk that made it past Maghda on Inferno has 50k health, 3.1k armor, 425 all res, 32% dodge. And he wrote that he skipped almost every champion/elite pack in Alcarnus and was almost one-shot by Maghda's insect attack. Near Death Experience triggered once during the fight. I can PM a prove link to a fansite with screens if anyone wants (registration required). The other guy (don't know his stats) attempted to fight Belial and died.
Arcane + Vortex + Frozen + anything looks like a certain death. Minion invulnerability is also sick.

Bashiok commented on the Blizzard message boards the other day that they thought invulnerable minions was ridiculous. Wouldn't be surprised at all if that affix is nerfed in 1.03.
Gear drops don't ever really improve. AH usage is pretty much a requirement.
Blizzard disagrees
"The drop rates were tuned for a player who would never use the Auction House. For the majority of internal development we didn’t have an Auction House, we all played using our own drops only. I’ve personally leveled multiple characters from 1 to 60 internally before the game came out using only drops that I found – we all did." Source
There's no real need for AH on softcore, because you can die a few times, decide that the area is too hard, go back and farm a previous zone, then continue with your progress. Or you can perform aggressive goblin runs without the fear of dying. On hardcore it is almost required to browse AH regularly.
