Luongo: part infinity

The other thread is over 1000 posts

Continue talking about Schenn and Schneider here.

Here are the previous threads. (James Bond style)

Roberto Luongo I - Dr Luooooo
Roberto Luongo II - From Vancouver With Love
Roberto Luongo III - Goldwinner
Roberto Luongo IV - Thunderpuck
Roberto Luongo V - You Only Get Traded to Florida Twice
Roberto Luongo VI - On Her Majesty's Secret Tire Pumping Service
Roberto Luongo VII - Jennings are Forever
Roberto Luongo VIII - Sieve and Let Die

Vokoun is off the market. Harding/Lindback/Bernier are huge risks. Thomas taking the year off and Kipper probably not available.
Where does Luongo end up?

No from a Canucks POV. Who would play as the second line centre? And Vancouver has no interest in Howard. I know nothing about Callahan though.

The Canucks don't need Gardiner, Kessel, or the 5th to make it fair.
We also don't need players like Komi or Conolly or even Gunnar(left handed).

Some assets will be going to Vancouver. At least one, probably two will be Kadri, Schenn, 2012 2nd, 2013 1st, and Kulemin. Ashton/Colborne maybe.

Anything else the canucks don't have much use for. If it was Gardiner/5th, Vancouver would have to give up something reasonable in return as well that would be useful to a rebuilding team, and/or take on cap dumps in return. The 5th is not unreasonable if, say, the Canucks promise not to sign Schultz, so he's guaranteed to Toronto as a consolation.
Either this scenario or the above will happen. Either way I see Kadri or Schenn coming back(with the second probably Schenn).

Agreed, Gardiner is already a tremendous part of our D. Trading him will put an incredible amount of pressure on Liles to be the only puck-moving d-man amongst Phaneuf, Schenn, Gunnarsson, Franson, etc (all average, at best, skating dmen) and that will be a recipe for disaster next season.

Just can't see Burke trading him nor the 5th overall pick for a 33 year old Luongo. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Luongo fill the #1 goaltending void, but Gardiner and/or the 5th OV pick won't be traded.

Me. I'd prefer Kadri alone than that deal. MacA's okay, but shouldn't be on our top 6. A second in 2013 is literally to little to late for a contending team.

But Kadri might contribute nothing. All he has going for him is being cheaper. But the nucks shouldn't be too cap stricken anyways.

And the 2nd next year is a good trade chip, to grab a guy like Dominic Moore (just an example) as well for the run next year.

Zero interest in Mac. We need to get bigger and he does nothing for us.

I agree with most of your post, but I'm pretty sure the bolded part is not allowed... would that count as collusion? Anyways, the NHLPA would have a problem with teams working together to limit the players choices in an earned (technically) free agency.

Yeah, I'd say goalscoring depth was more a problem than "size" was for the Nucks in the playoffs.

I suspect that Mike Gillis will push hard for Joe Colborne. He said recently that he wants to get bigger and the fact that Kesler will be out until December and we no longer have Cody Hodgson leads me to believe that it's a position he'll want to upgrade on.

A poster said something yesterday and with Vokoun signing in PIT I think he might be right.

He said we're going to see Luongo go somewhere unexpected.

The problem here is really that we have grinders who can get the tough calls. Hansen and Higgins are about the same level as Macarthur, imo, and Booth is a step up, but also gets the dirty goals. If we are to improve our offense, we either need someone with size to complement a guy like Schroeder, or we need more of a pure goal scorer -- someone who can get the easy goals. This is why Kulemin interests us more than Macarthur, for example.

Colborne plays like he's 5'9. The Canucks are better off pursuing a guy like Frattin if they want more size.

TSN insiders believe that Luongo has let it slip that he'll only play for 4-5 more years, of course he can't come out and say it publicly since that would be cap circumvention but yeah, if that's true his contract just became a whole lot better.

They also discuss a point that Oakmoose was arguing for the longest time. If at any point during his contract Luongo retires, the cap is off the books, no penalties. Of course again, Luongo can't go to management and say hey, i'm retiring in 4 years to help you guys out, but that is the general consensus between the TSN Insiders
