Vokoun as a Flyers Backup?

Never wanted him as a starter since I was concerned he was going to be like Beezer and had too many miles on him even if his contract was going to be more palatable to Bryz's. Sure enough he was not medically fit by the end of the season.

However, I would consider him as a backup should Bryz implode but doubt Vokoun would go for it....
or Bryz for that matter!

Probably wants another shake as a starter somewhere....

Flyers should still put out feelers especially if they move Bob which I'm not crazy about...but looks likely.

Quote:
Nick Kypreos via twitter: Tomas Vokoun doesn’t have a deal in place with Lokomotiv of the KHL. He prefers to stay in the NHL. Chuck Gormley via twiiter: Vokoun said he never planned on playing with the Capitals for more than a year.

This is an intriguing idea.

It seems like something doable and good insurance but I fear it would spur a sequel to the book below...with Bryz as the new protagonist.

But maybe not....pretty hard to get into Bryz's psyche if the Flyers were to make a pitch for Vokoun as a backup and Vokoun was actually amenable to it...

Doubt it happens but it's not a bad idea from a pragmatic point of view....

If he's willing to do it for less than a million they should probably consider it.

If we could trade Bob for at least a 2nd round pick, I'd like to see us pick up either Vokoun or Biron.

Does Tampa bay have a second round pick this year? I think that could easily be done

I'd be cool with Vokoun as a backup. Hell I'd be cool with pretty much any NHL goalie as a backup. I've said since last year that trading Bob is the way to go and signing a backup at around $1 million. Get some assets and save cap space. It's clear Bob is not going to start here so they might as well get what they can from him and move on.

If there's a chance of him signing with us for 1.5 like his deal with the Caps, I'd be all over that. Maybe that would motivate Bryz, knowing that a legitimate starter will take his job if he doesn't perform.

agreed, moving bob is best for everyone at this point..

the team/ Bob himself and the fans of the flyers, and the fans of Bob..

i'll say i will miss him, i think he is an amazing person with tremendous dedication to his game and i suspect he will flourish somewere else ..just not meant to be here i guess..

I believe they have 2, but I doubt that Bob is what they are looking for. Too many other more proven choices available via trade this offseason.

Yeah I could see Luongo winding up in TB. I think the Flyers will be able to find a trading partner to get into the second round with Bob though. Just not sure who. Haha.

Flyers went after Vokoun???

Guess it was intriguing to the Flyers afterall...if this is true. I don't doubt it and yes seems to have implications for Bob....so this thread also seems to have taken on more relevancy..not that he will be traded to Columbus but not out of the question either...

Quote:
In an article for CBS Sports yesterday, Elliotte Friedman wrote that at least part of the reason why the Pittsburgh Penguins made a move to trade for impending UFA Tomas Vokoun and immediately sign the veteran to a two-year contract was that they were competing with the Flyers to acquire the veteran netminder. Ultimately, the Flyers' lack of tagging space until July 1 precluded a move.

We should try to trick them into signing more 35+ contracts

If we could get them for cheap, would Chris Mason or Ellis be bad for backups? Heck maybe even Biron back as back up?

Clearly, Vokoun didn't come here because the Penguins gave him the sweetest offer. $2M for your backup is craziness anymore.

Also shows that the Flyers are desperate to make sure they have a better insurance policy in case Bryzgalov completely loses his **** again. And that the Penguins don't think Fleury is as elite as even pundits think.

If the Flyers are going to make that kind of move though, I think it has to be made sooner than later. Washington got lucky last year with Varlamov, we'll likely get 1 draft pick for Bob, but I also find it ridiculous again that we're going to these lengths to sign a backup goaltender. Let the market open on July 1, and see who comes to you. The difference between them is generally razor thin.
