Didn't Bergevin tell Cunneyworth that he was staying?

Nope, he never said that. He said he won't be head coach and will be returned to his assistant coach duties and the head coach will decide his future.

I feel bad for Cunney too, what a bad place and situation to start your NHL coaching career. I hope he gets a job somewhere else.

That said, this organization is turning the page.

Feel bad for both guys, appreciate the work they done for the team however I think there are better candidates for assistants than these two guys.

The guy was placed in a no win situation.. Hopefully Geoff Molson compensated him well for all the BS he had to put up with last season.. Best of luck to both..

“Following my appointment as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, I made the decision of bringing together a new coaching staff. Out of respect for Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur, I felt it was important that I notify them immediately in order for them to start looking for other opportunities without further delay. On behalf of the organization, I would like to thank both of them for their valuable contribution to the team and wish them the very best for the future,” said Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien.

Some part of me thought that they would get some desk job or something. Randy Cunneyworth was thrown under the bus and then had a marching parade walk over him. Got to feel bad. Hopefully someone else gives him a chance somewhere. Maybe a junior team or ahl.

Best of luck to both I hope they find work elsewhere

Seems like a nice guy, glad he's gone though, an entire overhaul was needed.

Don't really understand all the mourning for Cunneyworth. He wasn't put into a "no-win" situation and, more to the point, he wasn't a good coach. Best of luck to him, but I'm glad he's not staying on.

he was made head coach on a team that was playing extremely poorly with almost no hope of turn around. Oh ya, not to mention he had thousands of fans calling for head because he was Anglophone. They held a protest outside of the Bell Center for Christs sake. But ya, he totally could have succeeded if he tried extra hard

Cunneyworth accepted the job and he got his foot thru the door. He now has NHL coaching experience.

You realize this exact scenario happens with multiple NHL teams multiple times a year, right? A coach gets fired when the team is doing poorly, another coach (often the assistant) takes over. Gauthier didn't exactly shatter the mold when he made that move.

The anglophone controversy blew over after about two weeks, Cunney learned and use his few token French words to keep people happy, and nobody "called for his head". Regardless, none of that had anything to do with the way the team was coached on the ice, which was poorly.

There were what? 30-50 people protesting? Sure the media made it a big deal, but it was not such a big protest, mostly hot air on the airwaves.
He took a team that was close to the playoffs and under him reached the cellar in the East.
Sure there was alot of stuff that went wrong with Cunney and his posting to Head Coach, but that does not make him a good coach.
Overall I wish him well, but I won't really miss him. In fact I'm quite annoyed they gave him the Head coach spot in Hamilton, instead of giving it to Muller.

I liked Ladouceur. Thought unless we could bring on Robinson, we should keep him for the D

I view it as no-win also. All the players knew he was a lame duck coach. Gone at the end. All the media knew it, all the fans knew it also. Both Randys even knew it. There's no way most of your veterans will go the extra mile in this type of situation.

In the end, he had to go. Got to move on.

I'd rather finish 15th than 9th. I prefer playoffs 10 times out of 10, but finishing 9th is just depressing and your draft pick isn't as appealing.

The head coaching job in Hamilton is Clement Jodoin's. When they promoted the Randys to Montreal, they should have gave Muller the job in Hamilton.
