I haven't read anything about people being unhappy about drafting RNH, Hall or Yakupov, in fact I think your confusing our unhappniess with our disdain of Steve's GM performance.
Agreed the draft was needed, the FA's and big trade were not working out for this team. Lets be honest here, any GM could of draft RNH and Hall this wasn't some miraculous move on Steves part.
Are you trying to imply that the Edmonton brass directed Steve to be a terrible GM? Unless you have some insider knowledge I fail to see how you would know what was asked of him. I think its more likely that he was a terrible GM and good players fell into his lap.
As for the Lord of the Rings reference, that movie could of ended in 5 minutes. Get on griffin fly to mountain and drop the ring in bang, or you could do it the Steve Tamby way of dragging something out ever so slowly and just hope it works out.
But hey to each his own.

You're right, any GM could have drafted Hall, RNH and Yakupov. And any GM who did that would also look just as bad as Tamby doing it.
As for your question as to whether or not I am implying that the Oilers brass directed Tamby to be a terrible GM, yes, yes they did. My insider information was when they came out and said that they were rebuilding. How can you show yourself to be a "good" GM and finish 30th? By being a terrible GM, I mean not making moves that would make the team better immediately. If Tamby wanted better players, he could have traded for them. But what would the price have been?
I'm not arguing that he hasn't shown that he's capable of taking this team to the land of glory. But its unfair to knock Gollum's navigational skills when he took you to where you told him it was necessary to go. It's not his fault it smells worse than you had expected.
The HF Model
1. Decide to rebuild
2. Convince impact players that, contrary to player polls, Edmonton is not the 2nd last team you'd like to play for. And it's not always this cold.
3. Manage to ice a team of free agents/trade acquisitions that is solid in goal, capable on defense, and with skilled and gritty forwards who are competitive every night.
4. ????????
5. Draft 1st overall.

To me this depends on the context of how this rebuild was started. 2-3 years ago was Katz OK with a Pittsburgh/Chicago/Washington style rebuild with multiple years in the lottery?
If they all signed up for that, then IMO it's disingenuous to fire the GM for basically just doing exactly what you wanted him to do.
Renney was dead man walking here the moment he pulled that goalie in the Calgary game and the CBC cameras cut to Hall's reaction. I knew right then and there that he wasn't going to be renewed here. I also think his failure to develop Paajarvi and get much out of Hemsky/Belanger/Eager also contributed a lot.
So the team WAS expected to do better?

If they said going into the Hall draft that they were OK with doing the Pittsburgh route (which I suspect is what they agreed upon) and getting a few more high picks for the next 1-2 years to surround Hall with high end talent, in the same manner as Toews was on a stacked team and so was Crosby ... then IMO you can't fire the GM for simply doing what he was supposed to do.
Not unless it's a special situation where someone incredible becomes available on the open market as a GM.
They did improve by 12 points this year. If they improve by another 12-14 next year, they'll be right around where Colorado was this year, competing for a playoff spot down the stretch.
Honestly we probably fluked out into getting the 1st overall this year. If RNH/Hall didn't get hurt or Hemsky had a stronger bounce back season, we're probably drafting 4th or 5th.
What killed us really is Renney got virtually no secondary scoring out of Hemsky, Paajarvi, Omark, Belanger. Our GA wasn't great, but it actually wasn't that bad.

If it wasn't for Columbus imploding horrendously and guaranteeing themselves 30th place, we'd have easily found a way to fall to the bottom of the pit again. We had Barker, Peckham and Omark just waiting for the coach's call.
Instead, the rotten three were benched, Dubnyk played a lot more, and we skunked out a few more essentially meaningless wins with a healthier lineup than years past. With two #1s playing some marvelous hockey. With Eberle rising to role of franchise player.
What does this mean? It means that the rest of the lineup has gotten MUCH WORSE. At a time when Tambellini should be finding building blocks for moving forward, he has acquired refuse from several sources, and left more holes in his lineup than there existed before he arrived.
This is the work of a shatty GM. After Edmonton, his NHL career is over.

Pittsburgh had Whitney (5), Fleury (1), and the mighty Crosby (1), the greatest player of his generation who went on to get 102 pts in his rookie year and his team still finished low enough to draft Staal.
If the worst deals that Tambo made were signing a defenceman for 1 year and getting a Stanley cup winning goaltender in a mentor role then I am considering myself lucky.
Fans are just pissed off because if they were GM they would have somehow convinced all the big name free agents here.
It's weird how a Khabby, Brodziak, Belanger, and Whitney have all played better elsewhere but are/were whipping boys in Edmonton. That's a coaching issue not Tambo.

Nail Yakupov will be an Edmonton Oiler in my opinion. I also wonder if Steve has been lurking various oiler sites and guaging fan opinion with regards to his inaction and lack of information sharing, since his replies in this article were not as guarded as normal.........

The issue I have with articles like this, and a lot of the posts in this thead, is the disturbing lack of suggested Tambo replacements.
No one wants him as GM, but no one will offer up alternatives.
