Americans think that every first name should be anglicized. Case and point: many foreign athletes' names were 'transformed' into slang. In hockey, the examples are a plenty: Kovalev (Alex instead of Alexei), Ovechkin (Alex instead of Alexander), Marty Brodeur (instead of Martin), Danny (instead of Daniel), Gino Malkin (instead of Evgeny), etc. That how they think. We don't do that here.
It's part of their culture. Robert (Bobby), Dino (Dean), etc.
I do enjoy the bit of hypocrisy though when it comes to Bergevin hiring his "buddies" as parts of management. When the old management unfolded, Gainey was criticized for giving jobs to his "buddies."
Not comparing the two management teams against each other, but still.
I had the same observation about 2 weeks ago. But at the same time, if you think of it, it's pretty normal don't you think?

Yes he did, because Americans started it. And he liked the sound of it. Made it more exciting.
Martin for an American is not natural to pronounce. Marty is.
Like Serge Kostitsyn

Agreed. Think of it. Each of these guys has their own network of friends and connections to teams, managers, agents, players etc. Quite the ying yang from Gauthier's one man show... And no one seemed to like the one man!
My two favourite American stars are Dean Marty and Steve Marty.
Actually, it was Dino Martin, but they changed the name to Dean because it was more catchy. Everybody knows that. So....you were close! To be honest, it was Dino Crocetti, but you get the picture!

Serge was a funny one by Lajoie.
Last time I saw such a big group of friends in Montreal, we won two cups. So I like.
How do you know it's not the case? Do you know them personally? I don't think so. Not even close.
Not a big fan of Therrien as a coach, but for the rest, I like. Most of the people hired are young, brash and part of the new 'breed' of managerial fellows in the NHL: Mellanby was highly regarded. Lapointe has experience and if his role is to be the Claude Ruel of today, I say yay! Finally! Martin will probably be able to stay closer to home and will love it. Plus, I would personally listen to Martin Lapointe trying to teach me how to be a professionnal if I were a wannabie. The guy won and played hard.
I'm sorry. I didn't realize you'd met them all and come to know them well on a personal level. Forgive me if I've offended any of your friends.
What I'm saying is that they have a certain pedigree: NHL hockey players. Most guys who make it to the NHL don't have a lot of time to develop their skills in other areas like statistics, analytics, sports psychology, systems thinking, etc. If we were hiring only a single person, it might make sense to debate whether that person should come from a hockey pedigree, or an outsider pedigree, but since we seem to be hiring half of the people ever born in Montreal, we might as well balance it out a little.
So we have a team approach with Bergivin versus the one-man band with Gainey/Gauthier,got it. I'll judge MB's tenure starting with the 2012 draft,RFA contracts,UFA signings, trades, and the on-ice performance of the Montreal Canadiens because that's all that really matters. Good luck/Bon chance Marc.
Lets begin!
No experience, long career as a player, pro scout with Chicago.... what, we need more anglos in charge in this team, we can give a chance with a guy from here who work most of his life in the US anyway....
people here are.... i don't even know the word....
Let me help you. I think the word you're looking for is "petty". The truth is that neither Bergevin nor any other person who hopes to be successful in an undertaking can afford the luxury of indulging themselves in small-minded petty grudges when making decisions.

Good thing Pierre McGuire didn't get the GM job. He doesn't have enough friends in the NHL to fill all these positions. Of course Mike Milbury would have got one of the positions.

Whoaaaa..... talk about making a mountain out of a mole-hill and topping it off with generalizations about Americans. Your intolerance is showing through.

He strikes me as the kind of guy who think he's everyone's friend, but everyone is freaked out by his clinginess.
