I think Murray expects Koivu to be our 2C for next season until Holland is ready to take over the role. Anaheim can't afford to sign a player to a $3.8M contract assuming he'll play 3C minutes with our current salary budget constraints.
Whether or not Anaheim can be competitive with Koivu playing 2C throughout all of next season remains to be seen.
We'll use the #6 pick to select a young dman who will complement Fowler and Sbisa going forward, and worry about a 2C later if Holland's development suddenly falters.
We lose Smid, but we can also draft Morgan Rielly, who I think will be better than Smid long term.
Your obssession with prospects is crazy. The Oilers cannot afford to trade Smid, he was great last season and is the Oilers best defenseman as of now and is still young enough to get even better plus he loves playing in Edmonton and is a leader, why in the world would you want to deal him along with Gagner for a non- top 5 pick? Ridiculous.
Anyway, i think that Gagner could work well in Anaheim because he could balance out Getzlaf nicely. The problem with Gagner in Edmonton is that they don't have a big center to complement him so it creates an inbalance in the top 6, that wouldn't be a problem in Anaheim.
So what about Gagner+32nd pick? Do the Oilers need to add a bit?
How can you honestly say that? Phaneuf is a good #1-2 defenseman, but his contract would be difficult to accommodate with Getzlaf and Perry UFA next season.
Because they suck equally bad but Lydman is cheaper.

They are completely different players though.
We lose a proven heart and soul guy who blocks everything and is good in his own end for a dynamic offensive guy who might not be ready for a couple years.
We get better offensively from the backend, but we get even worse defensively.
We already give up a lot more goals than we score, I would worry about losing a good defender and a good guy in the room.
Wasnt J staal a 2nd overall pick?
Why would pit trade him for a 6th pick. Doesnt make any sense.
I dont see a problem for a team that doesnt have 18 mill in two guys to sign a player like staal to the 5 mill it will take (kesler type money). his ufa status shouldnt be a huge issue.

As a Ducks fan I have no interest in trading for Phaneuf. Our defense going into next year doesn't really look too bad. Also, getting a good second line center should be our priority, and taking on Dion's salary would make that nearly impossible and it would also hurt our chances of holding onto Getzlaf and Perry when their contracts come up.
Allen is not good enough to replace Smid and Reilly is a big risk. He might not be an effective NHL defender for at least 3 seasons.
I know that you love high picks and all but the Oilers need to start winning next season and trading a heart and soul guy like Smid without an immediate upgrade coming back is a big step back.
Want Derek Roy and the 21st overall?? He's a 2C...sorta.
we he has been the Sabres 1 C for the last 5 years so he is easily a 2 C and a very good one, I doubt Anaheim wants Getzlaf, Perry, and Roy as UFAs the same offseason.

I don't think I would mind a deal like this one, but we would probably have to send salary back to Buffalo in order to make it feasible. I could see Roy doing ok with Ryan on his wing and with this proposal we would still have a first round pick.
Um, my first guess would be Bryan Allen, mainly, why is he picking EDM ahead of other teams? Unless you suggest we overpay like idiots to get a guy not quite as good as the guy we had.
I like Reilly a lot, and if we somehow drew up a deal with ANH to get 6th overall, that is who I'd use the pick on. But you can't always get what you want, and if I have to choose between shiny D prospect or actually winning some games next year, I'll go with winning.
Scottie Upshall, Milan Michalek, Al Montoya, Gilbert Brule, Derick Brassard, Sam Gagner, Nikita Filatov, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Brett Connolly, Mika Zibanejad.
OEL and Michalek are the only players with the same trade value as Phaneuf. You're rarely going to get a top line forward or #1 defenseman with the 6th overall pick, so wheather you think Phaneuf is a need for the Ducks or not, the value is there.
I don't nessecarely agree that defense isn't a need either, it's just not the biggest need. The Ducks has a solid group of defenseman as it is, but while the depth is good, there's not any good top pairing guys. Basically, last year the Ducks had three mediocre #2's (Visnovsky, Beauchemin, Fowler), a #4 (Sbisa), a #5 (Lydman) and a #6 (Brookbank). The key for Anaheim is Fowler breaking out or Visnovsky bouncing back.
What do you attribute to MPS decline in production?
MPS's decline in production I think is largely confidence based, that and he is too predictable offensively making it easier for opponents to shut him down, his bread and butter is drive wide with speed and take a slap shot on net, his shot while pretty decent won't beat an NHL goaltender from the sidewall on a rush. He was also unable to generate sustained offensive pressure making him take these poor shots when the opportunities arose, this was largely in part due to inferior linemates, pretty much no one generated offense when paired with Belanger. Having both Belanger and Paajarvi pretty much joined at the waist when both were snake bitten led to a very ineffective line. Watching him in the AHL he seemed to be playing much better and got some of his mojo back and was playing more dynamic offensively and playing a smarter game in general.
People are out of their minds when they say Phaneuf is a liability. He plays the hardest minutes against the other teams top players night in and night out. He isn't the pylon he was in Calgary anymore.
I was expecting to surely see a Plekanec package here from a Habs fan.. Just give it a few more minutes..
Yes but I would want a sweetener with it, like a 2nd.

Not that I'd do it...but is this the type of trade Anaheim would consider? Does DP make too much money?
DP is AT BEST a #2 and at worst a #4. He is being massively overpayed and the Ducks cannot afford that.

DON'T DELAY
our operators are standing by
Not the type of defender we are looking for, let alone at the 6 mil he may be asking for.

Just my opinion but I think Bobby and Grabo would light it up together.
