Week of June 4th-10th - Sunday Papers

Sunday, June 10th Jets, IceCaps, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Note: During off season so as not to clog the board with the papers threads, I will just post a week's worth of papers in this one thread, always keeping the top post as the most current papers.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: KHL team rumoured to be chasing RFA Pavelec. The lure of playing close to home while making big money vs. playing in the greatest league in the world. Or perhaps it is simple posturing by Pavelec’s agent to increase the money he can get from Winnipeg.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

The Telegram: Planning a strong follow-up shift. The IceCaps certainly delivered this past season and of course want to follow this with a strong sophomore campaign next season. Problem for the AHL is you never know what your team might look like next year.

CBC: Admirals sweep Marlies to capture Calder Cup. If you didn’t get a chance to watch this Admirals team you missed out on something special. They won 28 straight games during the regular season and then won 10 straight to close out the Calder Cup, including a sweep of the IceCaps and Toronto Marlies.

Stanley Cup news:

Star-Ledger: Devils, halfway to the impossible, have made this Stanley Cup Final a series.

Star-Ledger: Bryce Salvador adds another goal as he continues transformation into offensive threat.

Star-Ledger: Devils fans have reason to believe after Game 5 win in Stanley Cup Finals.

L.A. Times: Now the Kings are feeling some heat in Stanley Cup Final.

L.A Times: Kings must battle demons as well as Devils.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Here’s hoping general managers can rescue hockey. As per usual Roy MacGregor with an in-depth assessment of what the game has become. Do you agree with Roy that the NHL has lost a lot of the entertainment value?

New York Post: Rangers mull Rad alert. Would love to see him and coach Tortorella interact. Appears the Blueshirts are considering a number of options to help them up front next season.

Monday Papers

Monday, June 4th Jets, IceCaps, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Jets news:

Jets official site: Impressive numbers. Breaking down some of the numbers from the combine so far.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

Caps official site: Thank you, fans. (video). IceCaps players thank the fans for giving them so much support in their inaugural season.

Stanley Cup news:

Star-Ledger: Devils believe Stanley Cup finals are far from over. These Devils have certainly not taken the easy route to get to the Finals and they have not made it any easier heading to L.A. down 2 games. If any teams has shown they can persevere it is New Jersey, but they will need more than a split to give themselves a fighting chance to win the Cup.

Star-Ledger: Are Devils at a disadvantage against much-traveled Kings? We are about to find out if that was a pro or con.

L.A. Times: Kings hope to share something more than office space with Lakers. There is still no question as to which Los Angeles based team captures the hearts and minds of most people in California, however if there is something most people in Tinseltown love, it is a winner. The Kings can go a long way towards gaining some much needed attention with 2 more wins.

L.A. Times: Kings suddenly are in the buzz biz. As I said above, this team has still not been widely embraced. However they can cement themselves a lot of news fans if they pull off this series victory. Would also be nice to reward the diehards who have been waiting since 1967 for a trophy.

L.A Times: For Kings fans, what makes sense is the sense of place. I always credited myself for driving 1.5 hours to see Red Wings games, but that pales in comparison to an 8 hour treck to get to the Staples Center.

Winnipeg Free Press: Former hot-head now hot property. The Manitoba product is showing he can keep his cool as his management decisions have helped guide this team into contender status.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Glendale opens valve on sewer and water accounts to fund Coyotes. The NHL has to be ‘happy’ that this drama remains ongoing.

Boston Herald: Thomas makes big stop. Taking to Facebook, Tim Thomas tells fans that he will indeed be taking next season off.

Illegal Curve Hockey Replay:

Part 1: Intro, Stanley Cup Finals (Game 1 Review, Game 2 Preview). Stanley Cup Finals game 2 preview. Interview with Matt Laughlin, play-by-play voice of the New Jersey Devils for WFAN. Calgary Flames sign Bob Hartley as Head Coach. Interview with Rick Ralph of TSN Radio 1290. Retirement of Niklas Lidstrom.

Part 2: Interview with Bob Duff of the Windsor Star. Tim Thomas considering sitting out 2012-13 season. Interview with Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press & TSN Radio 1290. NHL News & Notes. Interview with Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

The Illegal Curve Hockey Show airs Saturdays on TSN Radio 1290 from 12pm-3pm.

Winnipeg Jets 2011 NHL Entry Draft Class- One Year Later:

It seems like just yesterday that Kyle Kosior, Michael Remis and I were in St.Paul, Minnesota for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft but it has been almost a year now since True North Sports & Entertainment Chairman Mark Chipman walked up to the draft podium and uttered the now famous words “It is now my pleasure to introduce our Executive Vice President and General Manager Mr. Kevin Cheveldayoff who will make our first pick on behalf of the Winnipeg Jets.”

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, June 5th Jets, IceCaps, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Jets news:

Jets official site: Season Snapshots part 4. Some great pics from the past season. Buff is looking a wee bit intense in that photo.

Illegal Curve: 2011 NHL Entry Draft Class- One Year Later. Ezra, with the help of Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus and ESPN, took a look back at the Jets draft class of 2011.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

Caps official site: Molson Coors and IceCaps extend corporate partnership. The significance of getting good corporate support for a franchise cannot be understated.

Stanley Cup news:

L.A. Times: It’s polished effort as Los Angeles Kings close in on Stanley Cup.

L.A. Times: Kings face a battle of nerves heading into Game 4.

L.A. Times: Flush with excitement, L.A. is ready to crown these Kings.

L.A. Times: Kings one win away from Stanley Cup triumph.

Star-Ledger: Devils need to get goals from top forwards to have any hope.

Star-Ledger: Can Devils come back from 3-0? Only 1942 Leafs have done it in finals.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Habs name Michel Therrien new head coach. Well at least speaking french won’t be a challenge for the new bench boss in Montreal.

Globe and Mail: New Coyotes owner to receive at least $15 million a year from Glendale. Cue the Goldwater Institute music. Question is would that music sound like a hero or villain was entering the scene?

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, June 6th Jets, IceCaps, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets way below Kings, but taking their trail. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t take the Jets 45 years to win their first Stanley Cup. Perhaps the Jets can take some solace in the knowledge that they beat the likely Stanley Cup champs this season.

TSN: Pavelec and Spezza in TSN.ca Play of the Year. Ironically the Jets netminder will be in the video, win or lose. That’s because the goal that Spezza sets up was against Pavelec and the Jets. Ondrej has taken the lead and it looks like Jets fan might get to see a big win for their team still this season.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

Caps official site: Public Equipment Sale this Saturday from 12 noon – 4 PM! This Saturday, June 9th, IceCaps Alley will be hosting an equipment sale. There will be limited quantities of new and used equipment including new sticks, used gloves, used skates and socks.

Stanley Cup news:

L.A. Times: Kings are close to the Cup, but can they close?

L.A. Times: Stanley Cup Final run is great for Kings’ merchandise sales.

L.A. Times: The versatile Stanley Cup — baptismal font and cereal bowl.

Star-Ledger: Down 0-3, the Devils can find some hope in a 93-year-old man.

Star-Ledger: Martin Brodeur will cherish playoff run no matter what happens.

Star-Ledger: Petr Sykora will return to lineup for Game 4 against Kings.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Bertuzzi, Crawford and Canucks ordered to disclose details of agreement to Moore. This feels like it happened a million year ago however the wheels of justice turn slowly, so 8 years later here we are.

CBC: Therrien far from safe choice in Montreal. Reaction appears to be mixed about his selection.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, June 7th Jets, IceCaps, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets merchandise scores top dollar in league sales. As Geoff says, it is difficult to walk more than a few feet in Winnipeg without seeing someone wearing Jets gear. And the MTS Centre was packed with fans wearing the new jerseys and hats, so the Jets brand being tops in the NHL this past season is hardly a surprise.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

Official Site: Celebrating a successful first season. Selling out 46 straight home games and capturing the minds of hockey fans throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, it is safe to say, the IceCaps had a very successful inaugural season.

Stanley Cup news:

Star-Ledger: Devils win Game 4 by bridging young and old as Martin Brodeur and Adam Henrique star.

Star-Ledger: Devils’ Adam Henrique continues to show poise beyond his years.

Star-Ledger: Have NBC broadcasters been fair and balanced?

L.A. Times: Kings miss several chances to put away Devils.

L.A. Times: The Devils made the Kings lose it.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Patrick Roy speaks on Habs coaching job. Or perhaps the former Canadiens great is holding out for a position with the potential franchise in Quebec City.

Globe and Mail: Burke says he’s staying on Maples Leafs. The rumour mill in Toronto is on overdrive with the latest Burke gossip.

Friday Papers

Friday, June 8th Jets, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Jets news:

TSN: Play of the Year 2012. Hurry there isn’t much time left and the Senators fans have been awake an hour earlier than those of us based in the Central Time Zone. When last I checked, it appeared that Pavelec had things well in hand (he was at 53.64% to Spezza’s 46.36%).

Stanley Cup news:

Star-Ledger: One Devilish situation has this group believing.

Star-Ledger: Devils’ power play losing punch as chances still fall flat.

Star-Ledger: Devils keep level head, look to fight back against Kings.

L.A. Times: After many missed opportunities, Kings eager for a second chance.

L.A. Times: Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils remain confident for Game 5.

General NHL news:

Montreal Gazette: City's hockey guru calls its a career, setting off the siren after almost six decades of covering all things Habs. When your hockey knowledge stretches back as far as Red Fisher's does you have some pretty amazing stories to tell and he has done this better than most for the past half century.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Davidson continues to explore options. Wouldn't the Blue Jackets be lucky if they could see a similar turnaround with their club if the former Hall of Fame broadcaster heads East. When he arrived in St. Louis the Blues finished the 2006 season with 57 points compared to this year where they finished with 109 points.

Globe and Mail: Bizzarre OT winner in Calder Cup should have been disallowed. Never like to see a game winning goal which it is later determined should not have counted.

TSN: Goldwater Institute looks to halt Glendale vote on Coyotes. When will this merry-go-round end?

Saturday Papers

Saturday, June 9th Jets, Stanley Cup and General NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 from noon to 3 pm today. Guests include George Johnson (Calgary Herald)’, Pat Hickey (Montreal Gazette), Martin Cash (Winnipeg Free Press). Special guest analyst Gabriel Desjardins will fill in for IC’s Ezra Ginsburg.

Jets news:

TSN: Pavelec wins 2011-12 Play of the Year. There have been accusations that Jets and Senators fans were “stuffing” the ballot to get their player the win. But in the end, the newest team in the NHL with their young fan favourite tender likely won because of their crazy, dedicated fan base.

Jets official site: Season Snapshots part 5. The final installment of the best photographs of the Winnipeg Jets from the 2011-2012 NHL season.

Stanley Cup news:

Star-Ledger: Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk must score if Devils are to keep it going.

Star-Ledger: Devils have come back from 3-1 deficit before.

L.A. Times: Kings’ Dustin Brown hasn’t been the same in the Final.

L.A. Times: Bring on the hate – Los Angeles Kings set for Devils’ hostile setting.

L.A. Times: Simon Gagne talks about concussion symptoms.

General NHL news:

Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes lease deal approved by Glendale. Bye bye Phoenix Coyotes, say hello to your Arizona Coyotes! But will the Goldwater Institute allow this to go forward? Doesn’t sound like it as the Institute feels the Council of Glendale is missing significant portions of deal.

Delaware County Times: Flyers’ priority should be Weber. That would be quite the steep price to pay but the Flyers haven’t won a cup since 1975 so perhaps its time to do something radical.

New York Times: Making impact in Finals after concussions, three players offer hope. The issue is definitely front and center but is enough being done to change things to ensure better player safety?

Buffalo News: Jeanneret earns Hockey Hall of Fame call. One of the most recognized voices in the game today, he has made some memorable calls such as “May-Day” and “Tis the Season…falla lalla Lafontaine”. Give it a watch/listen and enjoy.
