2006-7, the first year of the cap, the cap was $44 million. That is 62% of the current reported $70 million cap. And that is only six years. Meaning that the cap has averaged going up 6.33% per year.
If Crosby makes $87 million for the next ten years after his current contract expires next year, by the end of the deal that $8.7 million per year would only be the equivilent of $2.61 million per year in current cap hit, as the cap if it goes up as it has been will have gone up 70% by then. He will be 36 then so hardly over the hill. It also should cover his prime years which should be the next six, until age 30, during which time he will become more affordable yearly. Maybe the same 6.33% per year that has been the case so far since the CBA was signed. If so by age 30 he would only be taking $5.82 million per year of comparable cap hit this year.

actually the cap was 39 mil i think in the first year
If you run the numbers the deal is even more of a slam dunk:
2006-7, the first year of the cap, the cap was $39 million. That is 55.7% of the current reported $70 million cap. And that is only six years. Meaning that the cap has averaged going up 7.4% per year.

He will be 36 then so hardly over the hill. It also should cover his prime years which should be the next six, until age 30, during which time he will become more affordable yearly. I think people are overlooking what Asham brings to the team.
He's a veteran, he's well respected in the locker room, he's a team guy who stands up for his team mates. He's a 4th liner, who cares if he's slow, and he's not even that slow, he also has a good shot and turns it up in the playoffs.
And more importantly, he wants to be here and he's not an expensive player.
You can't just replace that with Jeffrey or Tangradi.
Totally agree. It's a "moneyball" type deal. What other player are you going to get that type of playoff performance out of for ~$775K?
You all do know that the most likely scenerio is that Staal resigns here. Parise is a pipe dream. He is going to get something like $9.75 million per if not $10 million per from some team, if the cap does indeed rise to $70 million. There is a UFA premium and he will not have to choose to play for a sucky team to get a contract like that. As a percent of the cap, if would be less than what Crosby and Malkin signed for their last contracts.

Alot of certainty in your post. I'd say it's alot closer to 50/50 with Staal than you're willing to admit.
I'd like to see what team pays Parise 10 mil. Yes, players are overpaid in free agency, but that's just outrageous. It's a stretch for a contender to pay him over 7, imo.

Again, if the cap rises to $70 million, which is a big if, that is a 10% increase in one year. So $7 million last year would be almost $8 million today. Add to it a UFA premium, a LOT of cap challenged teams suddenly finding an extra 10% of cap space under their christmas trees creating competition, and it is not all that outlandish.

If a team wants to pay him 10 mil, good for him. But I'll take two Neals.
Yeah $10mil is too much...but when you look at it...its Parise...him and Perry are like the Crosby winger matches made in heaven! They don't come on the market ever!
We have the chance...I say we take the run at him. If we get him great, we can make room. If not...lots of other targets. Signing Parise would allow us to get some great prospects and picks for Staal.
Trade martin and tk and you just created the salary you can pay parise and still have what 9 million left to resign on other players. You can get martin and tk's replacements within the system despres and tangradi.
