Nono you got it all wrong
Government you have to wait until it's too late, THEN double the workforce once the pile is too large.

I think you're giving government efficiency too much credit. Government efficiency would be to lock the thread, and have everyone go through 5 different levels of bureaucracy to get a new thread opened. It would then sit on level 5's desk for 6-8 weeks. Finally, it would be stated that "due to unforeseen circumstances, part VIII of our speculation thread has not met our approval".

Further to Huff's question about Kelly signing with Boston...

There's still a few quality guys out there - Stoll, Pahlsson, Gaustad, McClement, Mitchell, Moore, maybe Colin Fraser - who will gather some interest in that 3rd line center role. Slater would be in that mix.

Kelly's deal is $3 mill/yr (4 yrs) and Campbell $1.6/yr (3 yrs). Both got a little bump in salary - a 50% increase.

So, I would guess Slater would be in the $1.5 mill/yr range. I can see him sign with the Jets - say $4.5 mill over 3 yrs.

You've got a pretty solid grasp of government efficiency...

As far as comparable, the Campbell deal is closer to what Slater can expect.

I would love to see Slater sign the same contract as Campbell.

I would think so as well.

Kelly has put up alot of decent production in his career and is pretty consistent in both ends. Nice deal for him. Man Ottawa has made alot of mistakes....glad I don't have to cheer/follow them anymore

Anyone else think that if Mason walks on July 1st, Chevy will try and sign Hedberg to back up Pavelec? He's a former Moose and former Thrasher.

Seemed to be the trend last year. All depends if hedberg has any other offers and if he wants to come here etc.

I'm assuming mason will leave as I can recall him stating he wants way more playing time...can't source from where I heard it but I am pretty sure it was in an interview just after the season ended...or I could of just imagined hearing it .... I need coffee

Haha, you're not imagining it, though it wasn't that cut and dried. It was the exit interviews, video is probably still on the Jets site. What he basically said is that he has to make a decision at this point in his career if he wants to be content to be a back-up or if he wants to push for more playing time, and that that's a decision he would make in the weeks to come.

We'll see soon what he decided, I guess. I would like to have him back though, and give him some more starts as well. They rode Pavs too hard.

I like Mason a lot - and I agree he should have had more of the load, for Pavelec's sake - but he's a guy who will be lucky to have a job in the NHL at all next year. Teams won't be lining up for a guy in his late 30's who had 20 starts last year.

Most teams are going from within for back-ups, and there are way too many goalies available on the trade market. Given the last few Cup winners (before Quick) I think teams realize they don't need to spend big money on goalies to win.

It's never been tougher to be a veteran backup.

Yeah, that's why I wouldn't be too surprised to see him back, maybe after he tests the market. He's obviously not going to find a #1 job, and the only spots I can think of where he MIGHT challenge for many more starts as a #2 are just... eh, I just don't think it's going to be a rosy market out there for him.

I would like to see him back, he's a good mentor to Pavs and an awesome team guy, but whatever happens I wish him best of luck. Very cool dude and it was fun having him on board this season.

Good post. Feel the same way.

If we sign him great, good team guy and a quality back-up. Didn't hurt us when he played, and should have played a bit more. But if he's not signed, then good luck to you, Chris. He seemed genuinely proud to be a Jet, and we were happy to have him.

But, he's a 'nice to have' - on a good contract - but not a 'must have'. Imo.

But Mason spent last season's practices working in his Winnipeg Jets pads.

It's all about signing Pavelec's idol Dominik Hasek.

Signing Hedberg would be awesome, he was a fan favorite in Atlanta and he is just all around a class act.
