Numerous positives found in disappointing Penguins post-season

Only two years ago an extended run in the NHL post-season was a seeming right of passage for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization and their rabid fanbase. But after two consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009, the Penguins have experienced dramatic early post-season upsets, the first in 2011 against the Tampa Bay Lightning and most recently in 2012 to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The upsets have occurred in spectacular fashions too. In 2011 the Penguins were so offensively inept in the post-season they couldn't have bought a goal for a billion dollars. In 2012 they had no problem scoring goals but couldn't defend even when their playoff life depended on it.… read more

The mighty Detroit Red Wings have had their fair share of being on the wrong end of some ass-kickings in the Playoffs. Not saying that that excuses it but it doesn't have to define you.

Anyway, good write up. Lots of great looking defensive prospects. Some look like they'll make the roster, others will hopefully play the same roll for us that Alex Goligoski did.

Can't wait to see some of our youth on defense make an impact.

"Numerous positives"? I'll stick with "silver lining", which sounds much more appropriate IMO.

To be able to make an impact you have to be given the chance first. Not under this coaching staff, if history is any lesson.

When has this coaching staff shown an unmerited hesitation to play young defenseman? Lovejoy and Engo are a pretty glaring examples to the contrary. The young guys got a lot of solid ice time when they got called up this year too.

forwards are a different story, but whatever problem exists there doesn't seem to be a problem with the defense.

Exactly. We had a top 7 everyone was fine with. When someone got hurt a young guy played. I don't see the issue. As far as forwards, Tangradi could've played maybe ten more games but overall so far I'm not seeing the tragedy there.
