2007-2008 Islanders Blue Line

I just thought I would shy away from the playoffs for 1 second and take a quick breather. Something that has been on my mind for a while now is the blue line next season. Everyone agrees we could use a top tier speedy d-man, however we already have an overload of bodies.

How do we feel this thing will playout over the summer?

Brendan Witt - signed through 08-09
Marc-Andre Bouchard - Signed through 08-09
Bruno Gervais - Signed through 07-08
Radek Martinek - Signed through 07-08
Freddy Meyer - Signed through 07-08
Chris Campoli - RFA
Sean Hill - UFA
Tom Poti - UFA

That is arguably 8 NHL defencman

A much as I would like to see Snow bring in a stud to solidify our blue line my guess is that all those same guys will be back. Campoli and Meyer will be doaning Sound Tiger jerseys just waiting for Martinek to finally get hurt.

Your thoughts?

I would let hill walk. that is if we can find someone GOOD to replace him. Poti i would take again if he did not want to much cash. get rid of Meyer if we can.

We should sign Poti for 2 years. I don't know what we should do with Hill. He is great for us this year but his age make it difficult. My top choice to take Hill spot in our roster is Scott Hannan. He is a UFA and he is Nolan type player for sure - good defensive d-man with leadership. What do You think about Hannan?

I'd like to see Poti resigned. These are 5 guys I want on our line next year.

Witt
Poti
MAB
Gervais
Martinek

I'm willing to part with Meyer and Hill (I know he's played great for us down the stretch but, I see him as the odd guy out next year).

I have no idea what to do with Campoli. He's playing well so far in the playoffs but he looked like crap the better part of this year. He clearly has potential, but is it the type of potential our blueline needs if we resign Poti and already have MAB and Gervais? I don't think so... or at least, I'm not sure. Perhaps if he could focus more on defense I'd like him more. I don't think we need another offensive d-man.

So, I could (reluctantly) move Campoli as well to make space for a solid, stay-at-home kind of defenseman if one were available.

But we still need to sign Smyth, Blake and Poti, so no idea what our finances will look like...

Hannan would fit in nicely. Miller wouldn't be bad. Although, he's getting up there in age. I would look to trade Meyer. Some team will take him considering he's young and cheap.

I have faith in Nolan to get the most out of a majority of the guys in the league. Nolan and Snow have now been together for a year, hopefully, Snow has a better idea of what a "Ted Nolan" guy is.

Arguably "eight" or arguably "NHL defensemen"? I might agree on both counts.

I can't see a soon-to-be age 38 Hill getting resigned, not if footspeed is a problem for this team.
At least one of Meyer/Gervais/Campoli (probably Meyer?) should be in Bridgeport.

Defense by committee seems to be gaining credibility so I wouldn't say Snow will have #1 defenseman money ready or willing to spend, but I would like to see someone top 4 who is young and gritty who is responsible in his own end - Ossi Vaananen?

I'd think Hill should be resigned. He was +6 and added lots of grit to the team. I don't think we'd be in the playoffs without him. I would send Meyer down, let Campoli walk, and try to upgrade Poti and if successful, let him walk.

Campoli is a tough call. He really got shafted this season and came on pretty bitter about the whole thing. I would probably give him one more year and see how he pans out.

resign poti (only at a reasonable amount).

and look for a #1/#2 D. that is the #1 priority (outside of resigning smyth).

let everything else on D fall into place.

Hill's experience, toughness, and reasonably strong defensive play, slowness aside, make him worth another small one-year deal. I would give him 750k and put him on the third pairing with Gervais, who appears to be improving all the time. Limit Hill's ice time, and he's worth having around. I also think there's no doubt we see a Witt/Martinek pairing for most of next season, and Poti will almost certainly be re-signed and playing with Bergeron. Keep Campoli as a 7th man.

Witt-Martinek
Poti-Bergeron
Hill-Gervais
Campoli

That's really not bad, and not very expensive, either. If an incredible UFA (Timonen, for example) could be had, I'd certainly part with Poti or Hill for that, but I don't see us affording him if we're trying hard to keep Smyth, which is a priority.

getting timonen would be amazing for the power play.

what are we going to do with freddy meyer? trade him for and not get much back in return (5th rounder at best?), or put him on waivers?
