Philadelphia-Florida

to

Dmitri Kulikov (RFA)
2012 2nd (53rd overall)

to

James Van Riemsdyk ($4.25 x 6 years)
2012 1st (20th overall)

Summary:

The Flyers get their young, high-end defenseman; Florida gets a young, top-6 forward with immense upside but consistency issues and (for the moment) a high cap hit. The Panthers move up 30+ spots in the draft to make up the difference.

Is there any value here for Florida? For the Flyers?

What needs to be added on either side?

Conditions:

* Assume, for the purposes of this discussion, that Florida resigns Jason Garrison as a precondition for this trade, leaving them a defensive corp of Campbell, Gudbranson, Garrison, Jovo, Ellerby, and Weaver

* Also assume that Kulikov resigns, either prior to or as a condition of the trade (somewhere around $3.5 per year)

Philly could add a little more and just go get Nash. Kulikov a good young d-man but better off going all out and getting Nash if your giving up Jvr

Florida too high on Kulikov to make that trade for a talented but too injury prone and inconsistent player. If Kulikov would be dealt, and Tallon would trade anybody for the right price, would have to be for more established high end talent.

I'm a Flyers fan. I'm also a realist.

At best, JVR's value = Kulikov's. If JVR is a top-line winger, Kulikov is a top-pairing defenseman, which should give him a slight nod for positional value.

Add into that the Flyers apparent eagerness to find a stud defenseman, and the lingering questions about JVR's health and consistency, and I don't think it is that outrageous to suggest that Kulikov > JVR.

The question, I guess, is whether the difference is more or less than the gap between a late 1st and a late 2nd.

A future top pairing defensemen for a player who doesnt have more than 40 points in a season? No thanks from florida. And to the person that said something about JVR and underrated in the same sentence that is oxymoronic.

Florida passes I would imagine. Kulikov is a real stud, and if there was a re-draft of his draft year I think you see him go top-ten.

I'd be open to Schenn, but my logic was that the Panthers greatest strength (in their prospect pool) is at center--Huberdeau, Bjugstad, Shore, etc. Schenn seems a bit superfluous, no? They are significantly thinner on the wings.

I don't think Briere would waive, and I think the difference in value between JVR and Kulikov is significantly less than that between Briere and a (late) 1st.

Again, it doesn't really matter, because the Flyers are either blessed / stuck with Briere until his contract concludes.

i think the panthers could use briere's services much more than jvr's. He is fast, can set up, score, and be a center we need. While we do have excellent center prospects there is an immediate need for at least a 2nd or possibly 1st line center for next year. It is assumed that huberdeau will start out on wing.

Hell no from Florida. Kulikov is the real deal. He's improved every year being in the NHL. He'll be better than Gudbranson.

FFS Flyers fans, stop trying to get every team's young defensemen using the overpaid, underperforming JVR. It's not going to work.

From a Flyers point of view I wouldn't be disappointed if this deal went through.

People need to quit looking at draft spots and look at what the players have done at the NHL level. JVR is 2 years older and his best season was a 40 point season.

IMO Kulikov is worth more then JVR currently by a decent amount.

As a Blues fan I find it funny how over valued JVR is when you compare him to Chris Stewart. JVR is a year younger with his best season being 21 goals 40 points. Stewarts best season was 28 goals 64 points. People think Stewart is worth scrapes or not even worth qualifying yet JVR can be the centerpiece of a trade for a very talented player. Stewarts last season was worse then JVR but he also has proven more then JVR.

This was supposed to be JVR's big year but he had injuries out the ass.

Considering that a trade almost happened revolving around Schenn and JVR... makes me believe Kulikov is worth a lot more than JVR.

No thanks.

Meh, the rumored trade was Schenn + for JVR. This is JVR + for Kulikov.
