Phillips may do well , he seems to have scored a high profile brew master.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/busines...436/story.html

.................................................. ..

Even though Phillips has surrounded himself with a list of accomplished restaurateurs, the NHL defencemen admits that Lon Ladell’s skills with malted barley and hops are key to the success of the whole operation.

“(Ladell) just fell right into our laps,” Phillips said this week. “Once we landed him, this whole thing just took off.”

Formerly with the famous Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria, B.C., Ladell started his own consulting company and spent years travelling around the globe setting up breweries. For the 38-year-old, beer is a labour of love, and nothing is left to chance. Ladell will go so far as to work directly with laboratories to create specific strains of yeast for each of his brews.

Along with Ladell, the partners include Pierre Cleroux, a founding partner at Clocktower Brew Pub and previous owner of Foundation restaurant in the ByWard Market, plus Jimmy Zourntos and Angelis Koutsos.

He said Big Rig hasn’t even advertised and he’s already getting calls from prospective customers for Ladell’s beers

Victoria's my hometown, and Spinnakers has long been my favourite pub for its really great quality beer. Ottawa (and Phillips)'s gain is Victoria's loss, I'd say.

I wish him well, and will go for sure. Unfortunately, nothing has been able to stick at that location. That could change of course.

My mother had lunch their today with Chris and Erin Phillips (Chris' wife) about charity work. Apparently my mother thinks the food is amazing... take that for what you will.

I myself will be indulging at the Brew Pub on Saturday.

If they were smart they would host the Sens Draft Party there this year.

I reccomened it to @NHL_SENS and here's what they said:

Ottawa Senators‏@NHL_Sens

@benjiv1 Benjamin - keep an eye on @NHL_Sens for updates on all events surrounding the #Sens draft and development camp.

The news about the food is exciting, I live around the corner near St Pauls HS. A good sports bar that is close by has been lacking....

It's a shame he's chosen such a location. I would place my pub in the market or elgin, westboro or in the Glebe. He has the CREAM.

It'll probably be a chain.

I could definitely see it becoming franchise down the road. If this location does well then I'm sure he'll try to open one on Elgin or Bank street.

"Now under construction at Iris Street and Greenbank Road, Big Rig Kitchen and Brewery plans to add two more locations by 2017, and offer take-home sales of bottles of Big Rig beer available at the brew pub and the LCBO."

I've been twice now in two days. The food was very good and the beer is even better. I was skeptical as I always am with craft beer, but they have hit it out of the park on that one. My personal favourite is the Red. I like it enough that I will be buying some to bring home. For all the doubters, my wife loved her food (she is not a pub fan usually) and she hates beer, but loved the Red. There is hope for her afterall!!

Also, due to some connections with ownership of the restaurant, I know that as long as this location is successful there are definitely plans to open further locations. One of the locations being looked into is the old Hard Rock on market.

Also of Note, Chris has been there both times I was there. Although, that is bound to change as the hockey season approaches! I've also heard there may be a draft party there ( from another source than what was said in the above post).

Went after work today. Food was great. The German-style beer I had was pretty good. Price was decent. Atmosphere was the only part I really didn't like. The place is just a bit generic looking for my tastes. I'd still recommend checking it out though.

Phillips was there and was nice enough to sit down with two elderly sens fans next to me and chat them up for about 20 minutes. At first I thought he must have known them personally, but then he started signing gear for them, etc. so I think they were just fans. Seems like a stellar guy. Hope this works out well for him.

Add another positive review as the wife and I dropped by yesterday. Tried and liked the Big Rig Red and Gold beers, the Red is very very good. Food was above average too. Saw Phillips pressing the flesh with a bunch of various partrons. I'd recommend it to others.

I am happy to read all the positive reviews of the place. I will definitely check it out whenever I can.

Location is important, but I suspect that the costs of operating on Elgin or in the market are very high.

Anyway, I used to go there when it was called the Grapevine (if my memory serves me here) and it was always fun. They had these events called "bladder busters" where drinks were half price until the first person pissed. Good times.

A good product can overcome a ****** location. Kind of like Scotiabank Place

One that also comes to mind is the Works location on Beechwood. It used to be a little dump called the Snack Shack which was always empty.

Anyway, maybe I will make it my new hangout. I'll be the guy with the Holmes 69 jersey sitting at the bar.
