The Biggest Goat: Bernier, Leighton, others

Name your all time goat and why.....

For me it's been all of our goaltenders for the most part but 2010 Leighton still takes the cake....

Quote:
LOS ANGELES — Marty McSorley, you're good.

Same goes for Esa Tikkanen and Roberto Luongo. New Jersey Devils forward Steve Bernier — with one of the worst-timed and ill-advised checks in NHL playoff history — has let you all off the hook as Stanley Cup Final goats.

Bernier won't get his name on the Stanley Cup hoisted by the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night at Staples Center for the first time in franchise history, but he arguably is the most responsible for the Kings' series-clinching 6-1 victory in Game 6.

Lagging far behind the action, Bernier's brutal boarding of Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi drew a major penalty and a game misconduct. That cleared the way for Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis to score on the five-minute power play that ensued.

"It's going to take a long time to get that play off my mind," Bernier said.

Hard for me to vote Leighton when Bernier's 5 minute power play literally just crushed the Devils' momentum, and on the scoreboard.

Once those 3 goals were scored, the Devils had no shot of coming back...Not against Jon Quick.

Hmm. I've gotta stick with Leighton. Bernier likely cost the Devils a Cup, but I think that's awesome. Leighton cost the Flyers a Cup, and I think that sucks.

Luongo's annual Playoff collapse is approaching all-time Bad status. Fleury was really terrible this year too.

Didn't Carcillo have a goat moment with the Flyers in the playoffs?

This one by Hexy still burns me too...

Hextall gave up some pretty bad goals in the Final in 97 as well. Of course only Brind' Amour bothered to show up for that series.

That series was a blur....I do remember how frustrated the Lindros line was. I remember reading Lindros' lips on the bench when they had the camera on him telling Leclair " I can't get any room/space out there." Leclair just nodded in frustration. That left wing lock totally messed the Flyers up....and yeah Hextall wasn't helpful.

If Bernier doesn't take that penalty the Kings very likely still win the cup. Also, how about, ya know, the PK killing it off? The fact that Bernier's even mentioned as an all-time goat is just another example of the trendiness of the media and NHL fans. "Bad hits" are the hot-button issue, so of course Bernier is the all-time goat now.

In my book it's Steve Smith, on his birthday no less, forever. If Smith doesn't bank that puck off Grant Fuhr's skate we're likely talking about 5 straight Cups for those '80s Oilers.

How is it likely though? The game was 0-0, Marty looked sharp and the Devils were riding a 2 game winning comeback.

And come on..it was a 5 minute, non-stop power play. How many of those have been given out in a Stanley Cup Final game??! Sure the PK has a chance to stop it, but that's the point of a PK...to be a t a disadvantage.

Smith's play is one of the biggest goat plays in sports history, not just hockey.

Leighton. I was thinking about how awful it felt when he gave up the goal to Kane.

Leighton, because the Kane goal was really just a capper. He stunk the whole series and the losing goal wasn't even the only bad one he gave up in that game. Bernier's team was still facing a huge hill to climb to win that series so even though it was a total bonehead play it doesn't take the cake.
