Oh, you will. He's not going to overpower goalies from the point too often, just yet. Traffic, more often than not, is a good thing. You don't want a clear lane for the goalie.

this. its good for him to shoot through traffic if he GETS IT THROUGH... if hes getting it blocked its just annoying as hell

Fowler's value on the PP lies in being a rover. He may need to shoot from the point once in a while just like a pitcher throws a change-up once in a while. But it better not be his bread and butter move.

From what you've said... It sounds like he'd might very well bump Fowler down to the second unit.

Vatanen- the passer. visnovsky - the shooter.

Getzlaf - the center.

Selanne and Perry - goal scorers.

Could be just what our PP needs.
He was the fourth best defenseman scorer in PP. Total Shooting percent was 4.7, which is pretty ok when compared to top NHL df scorers, but not "really great". But he has a great shot.

Vatanen can keep the puck in attacking zone, he can control it in very small space and almost always makes the right play (doesnt shoot for the first player etc).

Best part is he has this "x-factor", he can give the easy first pass or skate with the puck from defensive zone, dribble past 2-3 players and deke past the defenseman and shoot the puck in the net. Very useful on the PP because he is so unpredictable.

Sami Vatanen has no business to finish in the AHL. It's not like he has spent his career playing in huge SEL rinks this far. Pretty sure he can return home if he doesn't make the big team

I`m not an expert in these things, but wouldn`t he must go through vaiwers then, if he wants to return?

Pretty sure no. Him being lent to Europe is just like going down to the AHL. I'm not positive about this.

To add tot hat, I think there is more restricions on coming back though. Like he cannot come back to the NHL in the middle of the season.

I doubt we`d like that.

He must stay in North America. You never know what might happen with injuries or trades, so just being him here could be a huge advantage for him.

Sure he can, but then he won't be playing in the NHL in the near future then.

Vatanen will have to prove himself in the NHL like every other player, if he isn't up to NHL, he'll have to spend some time in the AHL.

I keep wondering...where is Vatanen supposed to play? Every spot is taken:

Fowler/Beauch
Sbisa/Lubo
Lydman/(Brooksbank/Guenin)

Playing Vatanen on the 3rd pairing seems like a waste to me...

Brookbank is a free agent on July 1st.

Sami can work his way up just like everyone else. If he ends up starting on the third pairing, it doesn't mean he has to stay there.

Not really, you have a puck mover on every pairing then, while making the PP unit stronger by having 4 defencemen who can all move the puck, without sacrificing much in terms of PK. I'd argue it would actually give us a pretty balanced defence.

A big problem we had last season was no decent puck movers on the 2nd PP unit, got to think if Vatanen sticks in the NHL, goes a long way to solving this, and meaning don't need to keep putting Getzy on the point.

PK: Beauch, Lydman, Sbisa, Fowler
PP: Fowler, Lubo, Vatanen, Sbisa

Vatanen isn't going to enter North America by attitude that it's NHL or home...I'm pretty sure he understands that he might need adjustment in AHL for few weeks/months... I don't see him spending much time there though cause he is too good.

Plus Vatanen seems to be a slow starter...at least last couple of seasons.

Guenin? Seriously... ?

Brookbank is likely to sign elsewhere, and I think we'd all gamble on Vatanen working out... Instead of going with Guenin.

I seriously think Vatanen might impress us even more than Fowler did in his rookie season... And Fowler never played a single game in the AHL.

Vatanen has been playing pro for
three seasons now。。。

I think he'll have a spot.

In the NHL is key here. He is an established player who has won acclaim in a league superior to the AHL which also has smaller rinks on average than other european leagues.

My money is on Vatanen making the team out of camp. It wouldn't surprise me to see him start in the AHL, but the kids definitely good enough for the NHL.

Of course, but to say it's NHL or bust is stupid, if he sucks in camp he will have to start in AHL and work his way up.

I expect Vatanen to be in the NHL this year at some point, and I hope he's like Fowler and hits the ground running, but I think he may have an adjustment period of say 2-4 weeks in AHL for example just to get use to the NA game per say.

What`s with Guenin? Imo he`s not the worst choice for #6.
Can score (got 2 goals in 15 games. no assists, though). Plays physically and is a great locker room guy, as much as it is reported.
He was +6 in 15 games last season.

Isn't it euro-standards on rinks in Finland? NHL size?

I just did some quick research on just that topic this morning. Was wondering the same thing.

It seems like Finland has multiple rink sizes in their league. Many non-standard.

Vatanen's team might play on a ~90 foot wide rink. Didn't get a clear answer, but I think that's what the site's telling me (60 x 28 meters, but not 100% sure that's their real rink).

edit: link: http://eurohockey.com/arena/491-syne...a-jyvskyl.html

double edit: I wonder if that means anything in terms of Vatanen being able to adjust. Since his league has many different size rinks (I think some are NHL size), it might be easier for him to adjust to NHL size ice?

If the majority of ice surfaces in Finland are (borderline) NHL-size, I'm even more fond of Vatanen.

Guenin is the perfect #7 defenseman. Why? He's had 2 way contracts his entire career and I think the most games he's played is like 20. I think if Ducks offer him one way contract for league minimum, he's all over it. Right now I'd project our defense to be this:

Beauchemin-Fowler
Lubo-Sbisa
Lydman-Vatanen
Guenin
