Yeah, no huge names in that Salvador, Stoll, Penner list, but that would be a positive outcome for the summer. Of course, not the best but two of those guys would take some pressure off of the top lines to produce all of the offense. Only one I wouldn't want is Salvador. I don't understand the hype and that was before I found out he was already 36. His situation just screams overpaying for a player that only has one good year left in him.

If we are going to overpay for a rugged d first dman then I'd rather resign Allen or target someone like Barret Jackman

I think JR is fine with his defense and he focuses on offense this summer. I can see him trading for a winger and signing someone in free agency. I'd expect our signings are someone like Stoll or Penner. After the season there was talk from JR about possibly moving Sutter to center the 2nd line but are hesitant b/c the like having that defensive center. But if JR can sign Stoll, he can easily fit in as the 3rd line centerman and allows Sutter to move up and then we can see what type of offensive player he can be.

As for trade, no clue. Would love if he somehow traded Bobby Ryan. And even if we have to use Pitkanen in a trade, we are still loaded in D. And since Murphy can't go to Charlotte, there is no way in hell they send him back to Kitchner.

The thought of that defense playing for an NHL team scares me.

Not exactly the defense I would like to see next year, perhaps in a few.

Suter-Gleason
Faulk-Kubina?
Harrison-McBain

Anyone like Kubina?

Suter-Wideman
Gleason-Faulk
Harrison-McBain

I could see Wideman as a Cane. I have always liked him but he will be asking for big money. I doubt JR could afford to give him what he could get.

--------

This all with the assumption we can land Suter. haha

I tried making a defense lineup I would like, but it included Mcbain, Gleason, and Harrison so I gave up.

I can see the advantage of having Harrison as a mentor for the younger players, but I can't see him being in the mix in a few years. I assume Pitkanen, Gleason?, and what should be Suter will be the defensive vet role models. At least one of Dumoulin or Murphy will also be on the squad full time, so there should be plenty to look foward to with our d-corps in the next few years.

I guess I'd like this.

Tlusty-Staal-Ruutu
Penner-Jokinen-Skinner
LaRose-Sutter-Welsh
Stoll-Brent-Dwyer

Pitkanen-Suter
Gleason-Faulk
Allen-Mcbain
Dumolin

Ward
Boucher

It ain't sexy, but we might actually win some games based on trimming the fat and adding/keeping people that can actually play defense. I don't understand why we are letting Allen go at all. I think I'd rather have Allen at 3.5 than Gleason at 4. Even if we keep both we need all the physicality we can get.

How about Brett Clark? He's 35-years-old, but registered more hits than Allen last season and led all free agent defensemen in blocked shots.

Or Cory Sarich?

I assume both would be relatively inexpensive options to fill out the defense.

I'd probably be ok with Sarich (depending on the contract) I think Allen is better, but if Sarich is much cheaper, then I'd be ok with that.

If you think this board can be hard on Pitkanen and Gleason, wait'll we pick up Dennis Wideman.

Sarich would be alright by me, depending on cost. I can see him and Allen getting about the same unfortunately.

Why do we need to sign garbage bottom pairing defensemen to fill out the defense? I think we have enough in terms of numbers to fill out a defense. A terrible defense, but Brett Clark changes nothing in that regard. Aaron Ward had a ton of hits and blocked shots his last year here.

That's what i'm wondering. I don't see JR addressing the defense at all unless he can sign like a Suter. Murphy is not going back to Kitchener, so he's here. They'll give Dumoulin a chance, but he'll likey be in Charlotte and be a first call up.

We'll probably head into Opening Night with the likes of:

Gleason-Faulk
Pitkanen-McBain
Harrison-Sangs
Murphy

And don't forget we still have that rover defenseman/forward in Joslin.

He's Joe Corvo with a hockey IQ about 10 points higher. Granted its still a negative number, but you know it could be worse.

There's that chance a defenseman could be on the way out in any trade Rutherford makes.

Gleason / Faulk
Pitkanen / McBain
Harrison / Murphy
Joslin

Is an alright line-up in my opinion, but I could also see one of the second pair being shipped out.

And this is what worries me. IMO, this defense is worse than the defense the Canes had last year. Pitkanen will likely miss time as he always does (at least a dozen games). It won't surprise me in the least for Faulk to have a sophomore slump so I don't like counting on him as a top pairing / shutdown guy. Sanguinetti and Murphy are very unproven, and likely very suspect on the defensive side of the equation and Joslin just sucks.

That's not even talking about Gleason and Harrison.

Unless someone like Dumoulin or someone else really steps up and has a McDonagh type year, this is a bad defense that is one injury away from being downright awful.

I agree, but I just don't see JR thinking defense is a concern. I mean when you have Cam Ward in net who cares if he faces 50+ shots a night. I personally think we need to bring in a top 4 defensive guy to put with Gleason to give us a real shut down pair, but I'm not holding my breath.

I agree that we need to bring in a top guy but also won't hold my breath. I guess I can't see JR going into the season with the only real Vets being Gleason and Pitkanen (who is injured at least a dozen games almost every season). I'm not saying he'll make D a priority, but I'd be a bit surprised if he didn't sign at least 1 veteran D to augment this group. Relying on Sanguinetti, Murphy, Dumoulin and Joslin to take 1-2 spots is bordering on reckless IMO.
