Not comparing the players, just the situation.

I'd rather tell him the spot is his to lose and sign him, then lose him over that.

He knows there's a spot, we know there's a spot, all he has to do is work hard anyway and the spot is his.

not really a stretch here.

i think it had to do with a two way or one way contract....im sure Rangers would have made room for him if Zidlicky did sign here.. he was an older vet in europe. im sure if he signed he would have made the Rangers anyways unless he really stunk or got hurt.

If he's signed, Schultz is not actually guaranteed a spot. No one is.

However, he has an "excellent opportunity" to take a right spot on the D corps.

The problem with Zidlicky was he was already playing in the top Finnish League and doing well at 21 years of age and he wanted a one-way contract. The Rangers were only willing to offer him a two-way contract, which would have paid him less if he were sent to the minors.

Schultz is subject to entry level rules. Those are 2 way contracts.

This kid should be priority #1 for this off-season. Adding an asset of his caliber for nothing but money, at his age, is beyond a solid move. Just show him that there will most likely be (2) open spots at camp and really only (2) other players who can win those spots (McIlrath + Erixon).

We need a team with 7 NHL caliber defensemen on the squad next year

Staal, McD and MDZ are locks at left D
Girardi is a lock on right D
Sauer is very uncertain

Schultz, Erixon (to the gym!) and a new (presumably vet) righty D are the optimal options imo
Bickel as an 8 D/14th fwd is also not entirely unthinkable - then to be used as a brawler when deemed necessary
Stralman, McIllraith are dark horses imo

Say Schultz does not sign, Erixon fails to impress Torts, Sauer is out and Stralman bolts to Europe... then what???

That would be a debacle IMO. Lets not think about that....Sather is not a retard, he knows we need to add some more players on the D if that does happen.

I am confident in Sather and he will make the right moves.

Jim Cerny was asked a Justin Schultz question on his weekly chat. He said/wrote McDonagh and Stepan have talked with Schultz about joining them. They are putting the sales job on him.

Rangers will be main competition for everybody on Schultz because he played with McDonagh and Stepan at U of Wisc.

I still don't believe we'll end up with him but this is encouraging.

That is quite encouraging.

But I'm tired of talking about it and I want to just see some damn action. We need the draft to be here FAST.

Jim Matheson knows Slats very well. He reported this two months ago

Quote:
Most NHL management types feel the Rangers have the inside track to get Jason Schultz, the best. U.S. college defenceman who looks like he’ll go on the open market because it doesn’t appear he wants to sign with the Anaheim Ducks, who drafted him. “He could play with (Derek) Stepan and (Ryan) McDonagh, two former University of Wisconsin teammates,” said one NHL GM, who feels he has no shot at Schultz. “But the one team Schultz should be looking at is the Oilers. He could play right away and he can pass the puck to Hall and Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins and they can grow together. That would be a no-brainer for me. I’m not sure why Schultz doesn’t want to sign in Anaheim, though. Something must have happened.” It’s the same scenario Blake Wheeler went through. If you play one year of junior hockey and three years of college and you want to leave school and haven’t signed with the team that drafted you (in Wheeler’s case that was Phoenix), you are an unrestricted free agent. Here’s what could happen: the Ducks could trade his rights to a team they think has a good chance to sign him. Any draft pick back will be better than nothing.

McD and Step can talk to Schultz about coming to join them. Its not tampering. The NBA dealt with issue during the LBJ and D-Wade stuff 2 years ago.

Quote:
Concerns about this issue have been mounting since an ESPN.com report in late June that James, Wade and Bosh met face-to-face before free agency to discuss their plans. Yet the league's general position has been that players are not subject to the same tampering restrictions as teams except for "the most egregious cases," when it can be proven that a player was operating as a direct extension of team management.

Schultz can't officially "talk" to teams until June 25. He can agree to terms but can't sign the SPC until July 1. The draft is June 22-23. The Rangers can't move a D in a draft weekend trade if they can't talk to Schultz until that Monday. If that is their plan.

I'm so sick of hearing about this Schultz kid, hopefully he signs with Toronto so he can leave this board for good.

So you're actually hoping a potential starting D who is available for zero assets will sign with a different team? Sometimes people say the strangest things.

Yea because then he leaves the board for good. He is being overhyped and people have hardons for the kid and he has no NHL experience at all, can't wait till he signs.

You obviously haven't been around here long. Regardless of where he signs he will still be talked about for many moons to come.

Of course. Who wouldn't want a smooth skating, RH OFD to play with the Rangers. Because you know, they grow on trees, right?

Since some players are busts...all players are busts. Right?

If they can land him, the defense is going to be looking really good in the next 2-3 seasons and even more beyond that. Have to hope he sees the opportunity to play on a big stage and on a team ready to compete at the highest level.

Step and Mac have to do their best recruiting job to get him on the Rangers.

He'd help solve a lot of problems for the future of the defense lacking a puck moving, offensive, right handed shot. This needs to be the Rangers priority of the offseason. Make sure Schultz is a Rangers for the foreseeable future.

Schultz reminds me of Shattenkirk. Both are righties. Can skate. Can move the puck. Smart players. Need to get a little stronger. Their offensive abilities are their strengths.

Hope they can sign him.

Obviously, if you can sign him you do. The fact that EL contracts are capped protects the Rangers from themselves in terms of over bidding.

I think some of the posts on this board are a little over the top in terms of him walking right into the lineup or even the top 4 considering:

a. Defensmen take longer to develop than forwards
b. McDonough is as polished as they come from the same program and he couldn't even walk right in to the lineup
c. We read and heard the exact same things about Matt Gilroy a few years back.
d. Most of us have seen the kid play maybe 3-4 games tops. How can we have such educated opinions about the guy?
