Why not just give the club hosting Red Bull Salute 'x%' share of the money made during the play-offs instead of giving them a free pass? If you are not good enough to advance, you dont deserve to be there. Atleast we dont have to see Red Bull Salzburg pull a stunt like last year, they wont make it out alive in that Division.

Vienna will get killed in their division but I guess I shouldnt get my hopes up about this tournament, could of, should of been much, much better.

Is this the official thread (couldn't find any other)?

Another new thing appears to be that the round robin games are spread out during a longer period. The last game won't be played until the 28th of November (with a lot of games in October)!

I haven't checked the schedule for the leagues, but could those games be during breaks for national team tournaments?

I don't see why they couldn't still participate.

Slavia decided not to take part in 2012 ET
http://hokej.idnes.cz/hokejova-slavi...0354_hokej_ald

There go the neatly aligned divisions with 8 teams each.

I wouldn't mind if all czech teams did the same. Preseason tourney is ok, but NT breaks are for NT, not some clubs tournaments.

I don't understand why they still call ET a "preseason tournament" if half of the games of the ET regular season are played when all the European domestic leagues are already under way.

Most of the will have been played when the Finnish league begins. E.g. Jokerit will have only one game left (against Färjestad) after SM-liiga season had begun.

Hey guys, is this tournament a yearly thing or is this a continuation of the Champions League? Which trophy is awarded, the Silver Stone?

No. ET doesn't have anything to do with anything.

ET and Champions Hockey League are not related. ET has evolved from Nordic Trophy, a preseason tournament that featured Finnish and Swedish clubs. Currently ET feature clubs from all top European leagues except for KHL (this will change when Slovan is accepted into KHL). Also ET games are no longer purely preseasonal - many are played during regular season of most of European leagues. Also the ET playoffs (Red Bulls Salute) is played (if I'm not mistaken) during December.

The trophy awarded to ET playoffs winner looks pretty similar to the UEFA Champions League Trophy. It is not the Silver Stone Trophy.

Here is the ET trophy:

Interesting. I'm sorry if I have lots of questions but I'm very intrigued.

Is the official name European Tournament? Where can I find more info? Who runs the tourney? Is it "hosted" like UEFA?

So if the Champions Hockey League never folded, would the ET be competing against it?

Do you think this will evolve into something like the UEFA Champions League?

What's the trophy name & is there tradition behind it?

Do Europeans consider this more important than their respective league trophy, like UEFA with soccer?

Is the IIHF involved & do the leagues recognize this tourney?

Do you think there will be NHL participation? Maybe something like the Victoria Cup with the Champions Hockey League?

When are games played & how can I get more details on the format?

Once again sorry for so many questions but I'm very intrigued!

European Trophy. Bo Lennartsson and no, its a invitation tournament. Unless you mean like Group Stage to knockout then yes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Trophy

So if the Champions Hockey League never folded, would the ET be competing against it?
ET would mostly lose most of its clubs since it would be alot of hockey for clubs to play in a big pre-season tournament, league and Champions League but it could always find other clubs. Perhaps make a Europa like tournament

Do you think this will evolve into something like the UEFA Champions League?
It can, however I dont believe it will happen. They need to change the rules around and start inviting KHL clubs (I wont count Slovan since they were confirmed before they joined KHL) and bring in Champions more like Continental Cup does.

What's the trophy name & is there tradition behind it?
I cant answer this for you, but Nordic Trophy is only from 2006 and European Trophy took over in 2010, not much history.

Do Europeans consider this more important than their respective league trophy, like UEFA with soccer?
No, not at all, this is just a pre-season tournament and still has some problems to work out, ie, the reason EC Red Bull Salzburg are "Champions"

Is the IIHF involved & do the leagues recognize this tourney?
Nope, the IIHF has nothing to do with this and I dont understand what you mean with your second question. Leagues give clubs the time off should they advance to Red Bull Salute like they do for clubs invited to Spengler Cup.

Do you think there will be NHL participation? Maybe something like the Victoria Cup with the Champions Hockey League?
No

When are games played & how can I get more details on the format?
Group stage is played from 12.August to 28.November. Red Bull Salute (Championship stage) is played from 13-16.December

So this is a preseason tournament? I guess that teams don't take it as seriously as a "champions league" would be, right?

Would you guys love to see something similar to a UEFA champions league? KHL participation, 32 teams, maybe the finalists play an NHL team like the Victoria Cup. I think the Champions Hockey League was doing it right, I'm confused as to why they put it on hold.

Bingo EbencoyE!!! You my friend are right on, from what we heard from the forum in Barcelona every one except Medvedev, was in favor of a Champions League type tournament.

I think it will happen with or without Russia, from what I can tell not to many people in European hockey trust Medvedev and KHL.

His idea of a 64 league clubs will never happen, it's not feasible and Sweden, Finland, Swiss, Germany even Czech are not interested in that type of league, they want to keep their domestic league the way it is.

Not just the Barcelona vote. I believe there was a Facebook poll as well where a vast majority of fans voted in favor of a parallel league.

Anyone who thinks the KHL closed-league idea is more popular is kidding themselves.

Just look at all the people on HFBoards that complain about the NHL. And the KHL wants to copy the NHL? Priceless.

I think you guys are right where each nation should keep their respective domestic leagues, including Russia and the KHL. I think it would be cool to have a Champions League though, even with KHL participation. I hope to somehow see NHL participation, even if it's just a small tourney like the Victoria Cup.

I will try to follow this European Trophy but not sure how I can & think it might be difficult from the US.

Hockey can be just as international as soccer, so a Champions League can & should be done. It's for the good of the game, the good of the fans, and the good of the clubs and players themselves.

Swiss teams play 1 game during the national championship. All others are being played in preaseason.

Actually these games are being played while the teams just start their preparation for the season.

ET will probably not take the form as the football champions league, it could (but most likely wont). It is one option to get international competition between european clubs who hold their domestic league in higher regard than the KHL.
