yes he was. would let u guys in on another thing i just learned but it seems i can't post info from my "inside source"
Go ahead and post it in this thread then. Threads with no sources are locked because otherwise we'd get 5 threads a day with someone claiming to have inside sources. I'd like to hear your other scoop considering this one came true myself, I'm not sure how others feel.
Screams " positive discrimination towards anglo coaches " to me. Gallant was, Q-wise, a middle-of-the-pack coach at the very best.
Maybe he has redeeming qualities as an assistant?
Really? We hired several guys with no experience in their given position. They've been around hockey and have experience no doubt but few have actually held the specific role beforehand. The only positive is they'll be energetic and into the job and not be bored of it.
Not enjoying any decisions made by Bergevin as of late. Seems like every french person is getting a job with the habs, no matter how qualified. I think this administration has the potential to be disastrous.
Gallant was a terrible coach too.
BTW: I wasn't referring to Gallant as one of the french hires I don't like, although he can understand french. I don't like him because he is a bad coach.

I think Bergevin probably advised Therrien on it and he probably didn't say no. Anyway with the way it's going they'll probably hire 10 assistants so they can pick one with different flavors. When you can't get UFAs, you buff up your management!

When he coached in the NHL? because with the sea dogs he was very good.

Similar to Gainey bringing in Muller with Carbo, and keeping Muller when he brought in Jacques.
GM's have their own ways, and we may never know, but Gallant could very well replace Therrien one day.
I don't know where people get that Therrien is a not a good tactical coach. Showing emotion on the bench doesn't automatically mean that you don't know strategy.
I think it has something to do with his history of his teams giving up ~40 shots per game.
I live an hour away from Saint John and I know someone who was in hockey operations in Columbus when he coached there. This person has worked in NHL, AHL and CHL and says Gallant's practices and strategies were house league calibre. This is a person who hardly says anything negative about anyone....thought the world of Hitchcock (Gallant's replacement) as a hockey guy. Mike Kelly was X's and O's guy in Saint John.

No, with the Sea Dogs he was absolutely terrible. He had an enormously stacked team in Saint John. It would have taken a special kind of idiot to mess up that roster.
I was a Sea Dog ticket holder and trust me when I say he was terrible. If it weren't for Mike Kelly things most likely would have gotten ugly.
I am not thrilled by this move. His answers will be a lot like Therrien's, working harder will be the solution for everything.

its the complete lack of a discernible strategy as a head coach that makes us doubt his tactical ability.

good quality ones too. We aren't talking about letting the opposition shoot from the outside and taking away scoring chances; we are talking about lots of shots from prime scoring areas in front of the net.
Would not have been my choice. Not that I dislike this hiring as is, but this is not how I portray a coaching staff unless we do intent to go with 4 assistant coaches. 1 upstairs and 2 beside Therrien, if so, I don't have that much of a problem with. If not, and if you bring Jodoin on top of that, there's 2 things missing....1 guy that will teach our d-men (and don't say Brisebois will do it please...) and 1 younger guy like Mulller or Gélinas who does have NHL experience and CLEARLY be the player's coach.
My ideal assistant duo would have been Laperrière and 1 of Daigneault or Robinson. Now, it surely looks like it would be Jodoin and Gallant...again....hoping it becomes 3 assistants with room for either the D specialist or the younger guy. Mind you, you get Daigneault, and you get the younger d-man guy....perfect choice in those circumstances....Somehow, I don't hold my breath.
Mike Kelly is the MAN in SJ. He's the reason behind their success not Gallant.
Come on...The PLAYERS were the men behind their sucess...not the coaching staff. This is the Juniors we are talking about. And when you are stacked, you just are. Where was Mike Kelly in the Mem Cup?
Wait are you trying to say that Gallant is french or am I reading this wrong?
He doesn't, which is probably why he got hired in the first place.
But, on a more "serious" note (many had their sarcasm detector off...) --- Gallant wasn't a very good coach as far as the Q is concerned -- and right now, the coaching level in the Q isn't exactly as its top level.
This said... he might have something up his sleeve as an assistant, which is entirely possible.
Groulx is a way better coach than Gallant... but Gallant might be a better fit for an assistant job.

The real man in the Q is J-F Houle. Nobody else.
I'd actually have Groulx before Houle, but both are the best, and frankly, Houle might be a better fit as an assistant.
