kelly has been resigned in boston.
no way do we get suter, parise AND semin.
we can't just "release" those players and given that bertuzzi was just handed a 2 year deal, there is clearly no way that they wnat to get rid of him.

also, out of interest, what about quincey? do we "release" him and essentially flush our 1st round pick down the toilet? keep him? try to trade him?

I think someone the Red Wings should look at is Jason Garrison. He's 6'2'' - 220 lbs and could be our answer to Stuart leaving.

He has shown interest in Vancouver, though, so he could be hard to get in Detroit. I think he would be an excellent replacement to Stuart, as he's sound defensively and has a booming shot. His rumoured asking price is 3.0M - 3.5M.

Where is that coming from?

From what I've read here (yeah I know, but still) he is lookin 1 mil more than what you suggested.

But I could take a shot at him if it's short and for 3-3,5 mil. No more money and not many years. I wouldn't want to give a big contract for a guy who just had a career year on a contract year and basically no one had ever heard about him before.

But if (big one) Garrison plays on Joe Louis next year, it probably means that Suter sweepstakes has been lost and found no top #2dman. And I don't think Garrison is enough for that job and that's the biggest problem here on blueline, imo.

I'd like to see him on the Wings, but someone is going to offer him crazy stupid money that I don't think Holland will. I'm talking 3.75+.

I Concur

IMO Garrison is a stud, the perfect no.5 Dman.

(plus he play the first or second pp-unit, also think he can kill penalties)

If plan Suter or Wideman or Carle fails, I can see Holland dishing the cash.

The question is, will he be around long enough for those other plans to fail?

if plan A, B and C fail, would dishing the cash for a plan D UFA be the best idea?

if we fail on parise and semin would paying jokinen 5 million a season for 5 years be smart?

the answer is no

at somepoint if holland is unsuccessful with his 2 or 3 top chocies and cant make a trade for a simmilar impact player then it would be best to save the big money, sign some really cheap depth guys to short term deals and let the kids get a ton of ice time to develop

If that happens, I agree. Next year's free agency is too good and deep to throw stupid cash around this year. Let's face it, there are some great players available this year, but after them the dropoff is huge. I don't want to see us get marginally better this season at the cost of long term success. I know many here will be up in arms if that happens though..

It's looking more and more likely that suter will be wearing the winged wheel on July 1th.

If he were a stud, he'd be more than a 5th Dman. Especially in a post-Lidstrom, post-Stuart world.

Guys like this would become the new Ericsson in about 5 seconds. Not that I think Ericsson is above criticism - I just think Garrison is another mediocre defenseman coming off a big contract year. They can do better, and cheaper. And if they can't, they're not going to win anyway.

Honestly, how is Garrison any better of a fit than Quincey? He has exactly one season under his belt of scoring more than 20 points. One. He's no bigger, he's not a rightie, and he'll probably cost twice as much on top of that (you know somebody will throw the house at him over those 16 goals, as much of a fluke as they are).

Our PP needs help, but we can do so much better than bank on a guy who's career high in points, until this season, topped out at a whopping 18. And I say this as someone who doesn't even like Quincey (but it's painfully obvious they aren't getting rid of him now, so assembling a cap geek lineup without his presence is just a waste of time, really).

Pretty awesome. I don't know if Helm is the right fit on line three. I'd rather sign a center instead of Prust and move helm to line 4

When are people going to learn!?
Free agency always looks good 13 months out. Most of those guys are going to get signed or traded and signed. And then a year from now, you'll be like, "I'd rather save my money for next year."

I can tell people in these off-season threads have not seen Garrison play extensively, and judge him 100% off of stat totals they read online. He is more than a #5 defenseman.

In a team with huge depth on D (which I think detroit is looking at) you would like to have him as a 5th D.

On a team that won more games in the playoffs than we did he had (among defenseman): the best plus-minus, 2nd most minutes played, 2nd in hits, 2nd in blocked shots, 2nd in points. He is good sized, defensively responsible, and has a bigger slapshot than anyone on our team. I think he could play a role similar to Stuart on the Wings. He could be a solid second pair guy on the Wings, who would contribute on the PP and PK. Flame away people, I'm ready.

As of today, I wouldn't say that we have huge depth on D, and really the depth we do have is pretty mediocre. Obviously we're hoping that Suter signs with the Wings and that Smith grows quickly into a very good player, but there's definitely the opportunity to upgrade our D. Not sure if Garrison is the guy, but he's certainly not worse than many of our guys right now.
