Avalanche fans think Johnson is as untouchable as Couturier for how he played the last 40 or so games

I mean with how many Dmen phoenix have and at the age I think one of them being traded is a very good possibility with OLE, rundblad, gormley, yandle, Schlemko, klesla, aucoin, Morris, they have alreadya bunch of solid Dmen right there not even counting other players that were there this year that might be resigned and guys like murphy and goncharovStone and summers, they have a huge surplus which could be taken advantage of if approached the right way. What do you guys ink it would take to get Gormely or Rundblad?

Yep, I kind of figured they wouldn't want to trade him away. He was also Dave Tallons first draft choice with the organization. I saw some people mention that would make him hesitate in moving him.

I don't know what the price of one of those players would be though. It's hard to judge the value of some of these players who have never stepped on NHL ice. Usually they are packaged with other assets to acquire a bigger piece.

Also I don't know why Colorado would trade EJ, they just got him in a big deal.

No. They just said he won't need surgery, and will be healthy in time for camp. That doesn't mean he's healthy now.

I think the Flyers are going to have to overpay for Erik Johnson. Especially if the Flyers think he can be a #1 guy in Philly.
I am almost afraid what the Flyers will have to give up for a top pairing guy if they decide to go the trade route.

Well, PHX needs goal scoring help and someone like JVR who has tons of talent, potential, and is already signed for a number of years surely is attractive.

PHX has Yandle, and other good defensive prospects....I'm not saying they would trade OEL, but there are reasons I believe for them to be attracted to someone like JVR.

I think Phoenix might have interest in Schenn, Couturier, Voracek or JVR. I would assume OEL is off the table, but if we could get Yandle or the younger Rundblad it would be sick. I would think the Coyotes would want Voracek since he's an ex-Blue Jacket . Maybe Voracek for Rundblad++?

Rundblad and a 2nd went for Kyle Turris who was a 25 point player who didn't want to play for Phoenix so I'd imagine we could get a lot more than a 2nd and Rundblad for Voracek...

Phoenx has...

Keith Yandle (25)
David Rundblad (21)
Oliver Ekman-Larsson (20)
Brandon Gormley (20)
Connor Murphy (19)
27th overall

Philadelphia has...

Matt Read (25)
Claude Giroux (24)
Wayne Simmonds (23)
James vanRiemsdyk (23)
Jakub Voracek (22)
Brayden Schenn (20)
Sean Couturier (19)
20th overall

In theory, you think something could be worked out.

Read + Cousins (+?) for Rundblad?

Rundblad is terrible. Not sure why you want him.

It's either Oliver Ekman-Larsson (20), Yandle or bust.

I'd have no problems if the Flyers could find a way to land Gormley though. You could start out playing him 17 to 19 minutes a night, but I think by the end of the season, he could easily hit 22 to 24 minutes a night.

No they don't have plenty of Cap room. And paying that much for a 4th line player, is a really, really bad idea. Not to mention that I doubt Gaustad will be willing to accept a 4th line role. There's some definite factors your overlooking here.

Phoenix would pass pretty easily, I think. If it was Couturier, they might bite, but I'm not convinced.

You know who else needs a 2C and has RH defenseman to burn? The Caps?

Carlson is RFA.

Read for Gormley seems like a good start to me. We probably add given that Gormley has longer term control than Read, but it's probably a reasonable starting point for discussions.

Schenn and Mez might be a better start imo. That should be reasonably close.

Interesting article up on hockeybuzz today--the crux:

Quote:
...One would think Markstrom knows he still needs to improve. He also sees the Panthers are on the fast track to success now that they have knocked the playoff monkey off their backs.

But the business side of the game could have Markstrom wondering if there are greener pastures elsewhere if he decides not to re-sign with the Panthers after next year. Certainly there will be teams willing to give him the house for his services if they think he is ready now and for the next 10 years.
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Dan-S...strom/93/44956

The gist of the piece is that the Panthers have been less than thrilled with Markstrom's progression over the past few years--even as they remain enamored with his overall potential. The writer suggests that the organization's desire to keep him in the AHL for another year might alienate Markstrom after next season, when he's RFA.

What about a goalie swap--Bobrovsky for Markstrom? Bob is more NHL ready now, has high-end potential, but has struggled to get consistent starts here. Markstrom is a bit younger, has a slightly lower cap-hit.

In a sense, it is a lateral move--a young, inconsistent Russian goalie for a young, inconsistent Swedish goalie. But Markstrom has a higher ceiling than Bob, IMO, and he should be at least as capable now in his 25-30 starts per year.

We'd likely need to add, though I have no idea how much.

Would it be worth it? I'm not sure. We still have Bryz locked in for the next decade, but injuries happen, and you never know what the team will look like in three years. Markstrom is more likely to be a 1A goalie in the league than Bob, I think.

Thoughts?

Carle's rights are probably = 3rd. Phoenix is pretty stacked at D, so I don't see why they would use their budget cap space on Carle. They can just promote Gormley, etc.

The rest of the deal comes down to Schenn, Gus, and the 20th for OEL. On the one hand, it seems like an overpayment from us; on the other hand, I'm still not sure Phoenix would do it. At least for their fans, OEL is every bit as untouchable as Couturier--and more. At his best, Couturier is an all-star caliber 2C / 1B sort of player. OEL could be one of the top five or so defenseman in the league in a few years.

I'm really not sure we can pry him our of Phoenix for anything. If we could, it would probably be Couturier + instead of Schenn.
