Homer is probably dreading going up to the podium since he'll have to thank the city of Pittsburgh for hosting the event and congratulate the Kings for winning the cup. Wonder if he gets someone else to do it for him.

I don't think Hyka gets that far, but if he's the player on their board at that point, sure, why not.

Anyone else think they should go with Hampus Lindholm? (besides the fact that I'm really hoping we don't have this pick come draft day)

THe Flyers need someone to go off the board in the first 19 picks, and preferably another to take a goalie.

That should give them some decent options in terms of defenseman at 20.

Would love him but doubt he makes it this far.

He'll be gone in the 12-16 range. I have Lindholm slightly ahead of Koekkoek and I have serious doubts that Koekkoek makes it to us, let alone Lindholm.

I wouldn't even care who we picked if that happened. Jagr and the flyers trolling the pens would be enough for me to be happy with the draft.

That alone could possibly justify a Jagr signing.

5 players I wouldn't mind taking are lindholm, Ceci, koekkoek, thrower, Finn, all look like potential guys who could eventually become first pair guys if developed correctly

Thrower and 1st pairing don't belong in the same sentance, me thinks.

I think Ceci and Finn are more likely 2nd pairing guys. Solid choices, though.

Koekkoek and Lindholm are probably the the only two with the physical tools to potential reach 1st pairing status--though I think Maatta is there too.

Completely agree. Good post.

I think you may be under rating thrower though. He strikes me as one of those guys who surprise everyone and develop very well.

I don't hate him; I just don't see 1st-pairing potential there. He's a bit on the small side for the style of game he players--at least at the next level. I have a similar concern with Dumba, in that sense, but the latter's all around game (and particularly his offensive game) as good enough to take the chance.

Could he end up as the steal of the draft? Maybe. But if you are looking for top-pairing potential, I think he's a reach at 20.

It looks more and more like the Flyers will select a D, which they need for the future, but our ability to do so has been lacking. I would either try to move up for someone in the top 5/10 or swap for a 1st next year and a lower pick in the 1st/2nd. Could easily draft the same D later in the 1st or in the 2nd with the same risk/reward, especially given our difficulty drafting D early.

Trading up is a valid option, I think, though it would be tricky without a 2nd round pick.

Trading back would be a mistake, in my opinion. If you look at most of the mocks, it is pretty clear that the last of the second tier defenseman will go right around this spot.

Moving back a few places poses significant risks without a great deal of reward--unless some team goes crazy. The best-case scenario there is that a team covets one of the two goalies and wants to jump up, but if you look at the teams drafting behind us, none figures to take a goalie until NJ at 29.

It's true that trading down would be risky and a possible mistake, but if you consider a player like Finn to be a mid-round 1st at best and a mid 2nd round at worst there are a good number of interchangeable players. Finn is just an example, but if he's mid round 1st talent you can get mid 2nd, there are others that fit the same bill (mainly the 2nd tier D).

In other words--if the Flyers rate Finn as highly as Thrower or someone, they can afford to move down to the top of the 2nd?

Maybe. But I think that 1st / 2nd tier of defenseman is awful thin.

The way I see it, the first 20 picks will be heavy of defense--possibly 11 picks--if you assume Pouliot sneaks in as well.

The next 20 will, almost by default, be heavier on forwards and the three goalies--

Unless a few teams go off the board in the top-20, I'm awful nervous about the Flyers trading back.
