I want Dalton Thrower, I mean the guy's last name is Thrower and he can fight. I'll draft based on a name, that was my reasoning behind wanting Cal Clutterbuck.

This is a beauty post.

We could draft the 2nd coming of Cloutier this upcoming draft and I wouldn't care...

On second thought, that's taking it too far but IT DOESN'T MATTER 'CAUSE WE GOT THAT LORD STANLEY'S CUP!

This draft is going to be pretty much a non-event for us - at least until a few years down the line when the players develop.

Our picks are #121, #151, #171, #181, #183, #211, and maybe #30 (depending on Columbus, which I'm assuming will opt for next year's 1st rounder).

There's always the possibility of the Kings possibly acquiring more picks by dealing Jonathan Bernier to Tampa Bay for a combination of picks. Tampa Bay owns two 1st round picks and four 2nd round picks.

Technically, IF NJ doesn't use their pick this year, LA drafts at #29 right?

Correct. The lists would show #29 as blank/NA since it is forfeited and still show the Kings' pick as #30.

According to Puck Daddy, Lou has already declined to forfeit the #29 pick this year. Apparently the deadline to let the league know was yesterday - and it passed without word from him.

True. We might come out of the draft with Brett Connolly plus a couple of top-60 picks.

I think Jersey has it's eye on taking a Goalie with that 29th pick.... There are some good talented Goalie's in this draft.

It worked with Quick. I'm pretty sure the Kings took players named Quick and Fast in the same draft. It worked with one..

I could see Bernier+30th being moved to Tampa for their 10th overall and a high 2nd round pick.

Not my ideal scenario, but regardless I'd be surprised if we picked at #30

Would be ideal but can't happen since Columbus has until 2 picks prior to the 30th pick to inform the Kings. So they can't do that deal unless there is an agreement after the 30th pick if the Kings have the pick to select somebody for them... More likely will be 2 seconds and a player for Bernier...

I thought it would be fun to look up some old Red Line Report prospect guides:

From 2005:
Jonathan Quick
"Finally, Jonathan Quick has also been playing at a low level in the prep ranks, but he has led Avon to two consecutive New England Prep championships and is the backbone of the program. He competes extremely well under pressure and seems to always come up with the big save at key moments. Quick is incredibly ... well, quick, and exceptionally flexible and acrobatic. Perhaps his biggest strength is that he never gives up on a play. He relies a bit too much on his great reflexes and needs to refine his techniques, but he's got the physical tools and strong mental make-up."

Ranked 10th out of Goalies and a 3rd rounder. TSN mentioned that at the time it came down to one scout making the choice between Quick (72) and Ben Bishop (85). Taking a look at the draft. Of the 4 goalies taken in the 2nd round only 1 has made the NHL (Ondrej Pavelec). You've got to wonder. If Bishop had been in our organization with our development system would he have been the guy? 3/4ths of the goalies never made it to the NHL let alone become a starter.... The draft is a funny thing isn't it?

"Anze Kopitar is the top European this year at any position. He's the first top-flight prospect ever produced by Slovenia, and quite possibly the best pure sniper in this year's crop. He's deadly from the circles in and wants the puck on his stick at crunch time. With a big-time shot and explosive, game-breaking abilities, he'll be off the board early."

RLR had him 5th in forwards. Thank god for the drop!

From 2006:
Jonathan Bernier
"We consider this to be a down year for goaltenders. It's not so much a quantity issue — it's actually a fairly deep crop.

The issue is quality: We don't see any world-beating, franchise netminders coming out of this year's crop. In fact, we did a quick comparison to our own internal draft grades from last season, and we determined that the top-ranked goalie on our board this year —Jonathan Bernier— would have been no better than the No. 6 netminder on our 2005 draft board.

If there is a consensus "chalk" pick at the top, it would have to be Bernier. He has been battle tested in the QMJHL for two years, and he has a wealth of international experience — yet is still two months away from his 18th birthday. However, we don't see him in the same stratosphere as other recent top goalies coming out of the Q."
Ranked 1st in goalies and 1st rounder.

God is it good to see Los Angeles pick last every round.

If CBJ opts for our pick, the lowest one we get is 121. Yikes.

We can trade Bernier now If we can trade up one spot in the 9th round, so we can get the next Brian Elliott!

You guys are forgetting the best part!?!?!? DL is a much better drafter with 2nd round picks then first round picks...so it "benefits" the Kings to pick late (assuming they get the pick)

If there's a recent draft where I don't mind losing our first three picks, it's this one.

i wonder if it would have been better if we tanked this year so we could stock up on a few more picks before we won the cup the next couple of years. we're going to be good for a long time anyways, but our prospect cupboard is pretty bare. Imagine winning the cup in the next couple of years with a couple of blue chippers in the farm. We'd be awesome forever!

Interesting article. Note the 1979 year & the 2003 year. Do you guys know the significance? I do!

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=398437

Look, it's Chinese astrology:

1979
1979 + 12 = 1991 (another really strong draft)
1979 + 12 + 12 = 2003

1979 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 2015 (this will be another good one. Book it!)

You may ask yourself "why"? That's a bit more complicated. It has something to do with the fact that "most" players eligible for those respective draft years were born during the Chinese Year of the Rat. Why is that significant? Because Rat folks are said to be more intelligent/ambitious than the other 11 types of folks. In short, collect draft picks and get the Rats!
