The San Jose Sharks have traded Joe Thornton, Ryane Clowe, and Harri Sateri to the Toronto Maple Lefs in exchange for Joffrey Lupul, Clarke MacArthur, and the 5th overall pick in this years draft.

The Sharks would like to thank Joe and Ryane for their services and wish them the best in Toronto. We're looking to get younger and faster with our forwards who have struggled offensively for the last couple of years.

We're very happy to add Joffrey to the Sharks. We've kept a close on eye on him since his start in Anaheim, and we believe he is the type of forward that would mesh really well with the current group. Also, a RH shooter on the left side is something we could really use, and we're happy Joffrey could be that guy.

Clarke has provided the Maple Leafs with a couple of very good scoring seasons, and we believe that scoring will translate very well into our forward group. We feel his playmaking abilities will work very well with Logan.

With the 5th overall pick, we've had our eye on a couple of players that we hope to still be available at that spot. We're looking to get younger, and what better way to do that than with a top-5 pick in a very good draft year?

Sharks New Lineup:

Lupul-Marleau-Havlat
MacArthur-Couture-Pavelski
Winnik-Handzus-Wingels
XXX-Moore-XXX

Stuart-Boyle
Vlasic-Burns
XXX-Demers

Niemi
Greiss
Confirmed!

A true #1C is the hardest thing to find in the NHL, so we are ESTATIC to grab an elite one without "gutting the farm". Big Joe is a local boy whose playmaking ability will be the perfect compliment to Phil Kessel, the two of them will make magic together. Losing Lupul was tough after a fine season, but it was a great case of "buy low sell high", and we thank him for what he brought to the team

Sateri is an intriguing G prospect. With the Monster and Rynnas likely on the way out (btw, their rights are available ), we see potential in the young Goalie as a future 1b/2

Clowe fills another need, a true PWF. This was another case of "buy low sell high" on talented young winger Clarke MacArthur, whose scoring punch wil be missed but Ryane's skillset will better suit us going forward

The Marlies run to the Calder final showed us our prospect pool was good enough that we could trade Pick 5. All in all this was a home run!

((Still looking to talk trade. I start another work cycle monday so this weekend would be the time to do it))

St. Louis still looking for a top pairing LHD and a top two three center. Might look to free agency if needed.

Sens resign RFA's and UFA's

The Ottawa Senators are pleased to announce that the club has come to terms on a new contract for all star defenseman Erik Karlsson, who agreed to a 7 year deal worth $49M along with a full no-movement clause.

"We are very excited to have a premier offensive defenseman locked up to a long-term deal like this. While defense can be taught, the cool, calm composure that Erik displays is something that only special players possess. We look forward to Erik leading our blueline for the foreseeable future."

The Senators also locked up other key restricted & unrestriced free agents, including:

Nick Foligno - 1 year, $3,750,000
Stephane Da Costa - 1 year, $900,000 ($100,000 AHL)
Jim O'Brien - 3 years, $2,775,000 ($925,000/yr)
Eric Gryba - 2 years, $1,500,000 ($750,000/yr NHL, $85,000/yr AHL)
Rob Klinkhammer - 1 year, $600,000 ($100,000 AHL)
Matt Carkner - 1 year, $925,000

Sens add Hjalmarsson

The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Zack Smith, Patrick Wiercioch and the clubs 2012 3rd round draft pick.

"We are pleased to add a young, top four defenseman like Nick. We feel that he takes care of his own end first and foremost, which will compliment the strong offensive play of Erik (Karlsson) well. It was very hard to give up Zack and Patrick, as we feel that both are quality people and players, but you have to give in order to get. We wish them nothing but the best in Chicago where we know they will do well."

agree to the Niklas Hjalmarsson deal.

Our prospect cupboard gets deeper with the addition of Wiercioch, who will be strongly considered at camp. Smith will be given a crack at the top six throughout the year, but may settle in on the third line.

We wish Niklas all the best in Ottawa.

UPDATED TRADE BLOCK

With the big deal last night, plus another possible move pending an NMC waive *hint, hint*, here's the update:

LOOKING FOR:
Top 6 Winger (preferable traits: young, defensively aware, can score)
Quality Bottom 6er or two (if they can fil in at Top 6 when needed that helps too)

Shutdown D-man (preferable if he's youngish, Top 4 capable, and/or in his prime)

#1 Goalie (or a 1B/veteran 2 if he's cheap)

High-end Prospects (have a ton of depth, but would like to add a guy or two with Top 3F/Top 2 D potential)

Actively Shopping:

Lombardi (cheap)
Armstrong (at a discount due to contract)
Connolly (cheap)
Orr (dirt cheap)

Rynnas(RFA)
Liles
ALL UFA rights (dirt cheap)

Others can be discussed too....

The Ottawa Senators have pulled off their second trade in less than one hour, this time with the Colorado Avalanche. The club has acquired Cameron Gaunce, along with Colorado's 2012 3rd and 5th round draft picks, in exchange for Matt Puempel.

Colorado accepts. This was just a matter of Gaunce falling behind a number of highly touted defensive prospects and the Avs needing to add to their future forward core. The Avs organizations thanks The Sens for an easy negotiation and wish Cameron the best of luck in Ottawa.
