THE OT THREAD - Lockout edition

Does anyone know if there is any gym/fitness centre that rents out their gym for ball hockey?

It was a few years back but I played floor hockey a couple of times at the Rundle ACT Rec Centre.

You can check with a local school about renting their gym, they might refer you to the school board. I used to teach karate and we rented gym space.

Or ask the local community center.

Vanguard catholic college rents out their gym and you don't have to go through the school board and their gym is pretty nice.

We were renting it every monday but decided to stop for the summer, more time for golf.

You're probably not allowed to play ball hockey in school gyms. My dad and a bunch of his friends used to play floor hockey in an elementary school gym but for the past 5 years they haven't been allowed to play there.

Gym rentals are hard to come by these days. Most of the schools no longer allow wooden sticks on the gym floor so unless you and your crew all play with those crappy plastic blades, you are probably out of luck. Some places like grant Macewen or the gym at commonwealth stadium may still allow you to play hockey but if you are going to shell out for those places, you might as well just rent the space at one of the soccer centers. I know you can rent space at the old golf dome for practice but not sure of the cost. In my opinion your best bet is to head to one of the outdoor rinks that is paved with asphalt and play for free as long as you want. Worst case scenario is you have to play with a few randoms. There is one at a french school of which the name escapes me. It is north of 82 ave and just off of 95 street. Capilano school was also paved at one point, but not sure if it is still around.

you are correct. Being a custodian in the school board for 7 years, Floor Hockey is not allowed in schools.

Take a page out of Brian Burke's book and rent a barn.

In the Edmonton school district.

There is a school out in Leduc that I play ball hockey with every Monday during the winter. Rent there for two hours is super cheap too.

They don't allow floor hockey with wood sticks. Plastic only.

go to the YMCA gym in downtown any time and say you know PACKY D, you'll get the gym right there. They might even give you a free month pass if your lucky.

If your looking for a gym in the northside, than try the islamic school. Private school that allows hockey, i go every week with my buddies, perfect for 4vs.4 and even pulled off 5vs5 a few times. Give them a call, very friendly and has nets.

Wait.. what? Why can't you play floor hockey? I know growing up as a kid we used to get to pick what sport we played in gym every week or two and we always picked floor hockey.

They don't want sticks marking up the floor. I think a wood w/out tape or ABS blade would be fine though.

Looks like Travis Baumgartner was apprehended Saturday at the border crossing by Abbotsford.

I was so relieved when I got the breaking news from the Journal. Great work by the US border patrol. I hope he likes dry bread, because that's all he's got to eat for the rest of his life while he rots in a cell.

I wish that were true. But not with the Canadian justice system.

Well one consolation might be that the head of the Edmonton Max happens to be the father of one of the victims.

Also wanted to clear up some facts from what I know of this entire incident. Apparently the company's employees had complained about Travis for several incidents, one being what he had posted on social media websites and a few other work related incidents. Travis was set to be released from his position the next morning, however he still had access to his locker(vest, gun, etc.). Travis caught wind of this and apparently wasn't even scheduled to be on shift that night and thus caught the team even further off guard.

Travis also had a very heated argument with his mother that evening about money that he owed her for his truck. He left the house in a rage all pissed off that night and told her that he would get her money.

Not that it really matters to the overall case but Travis was caught with a lot of cash at the American border. This was after he had stopped and left random amounts of cash in friends mailboxes.

I see the Journals website says he was found with $330k in cash but I would think it's more than that.
