Ottawa and the hawks

Do you guys think that this rumor of hammer for smith and a draft choice has any legs to it.i really can't see the hawks doing this.smith is nothing more than a 4th line center?i seen him play 20 games last year.he gets his nose dirty a lot,but to give up hammer for him?is the the price for a bit of toughness?wht to you guys think.

Knowing who our GM is...I do think it has legs.

This only makes sense if Ottawa is including another asset in the deal. I'd feel really good about it if Bowman was going to aggressively target another top 4 defenseman in free agency. I don't think

Keith-Seabrook
Oduya-Leddy
Montador-Olsen
vet 7th defenseman

is good enough to win.

It's only a good trade if we can sign Suter. If not we'll be rolling one elite d-pair playing 26+ minutes a game, 3 3rd pairing defenseman, Olsen, and a 7th Dman. With our goaltending I don't see how that wouldn't be disasterous, even with a new and improved center depth

I don't love Jackman but he would be a suitable replacement for Hjalmersson. In theory you could get Smith and a good prospect, Jackman to play on the 2nd pairing and PK, and still have enough cap space to sign a 2nd line center.

Hard to assess without knowing what the "draft pick" is. If its a seventh its a bad deal. If its a first not so much.

Which draft pick is it? A first or second then I MIGHT consider it. If not, then it's a real stretch and Ottawa will have to add another asset.

It doesn't matter what the pick is. This team should be getting better on the back end now, not worse. I'd say no even if it was a first. Who plays on the second pairing if we make this trade? We'd have zero top 4 quality d men after our first pairing. Smith is a very nice player but you don't trade a top 4 d man for a 4C and a pick when A. your defense is troubled as is and B. your team is in win now mode.

Is there some reason we're dumping one of our few physical defensemen?

At least, he was physical until that suspension cut his balls off.

42 hits over the season doesn't sound too physical if you ask me. Can anyone provide some analysis on Hjalm...

I've heard the trade will be Hjalmarsson for Smith, a 4th and the rights to Carkner. I think Carkner would be fantastic on Chicago and he'd be highly likely to sign for under 1.5mil. I could easily see a 3yr 4mil contract for him.

Hjalmarrson played really well in the Hawks cup run and everyone was excited for his future. That is why he was retained over guys like Ladd and Niemi. However a suspension due to mistimed hit on Pominville early on in 2010-11 season really neutered him and his physical game has all but disappeared. We do get to see glimpses of it every now and then.

Very good summary of Hammer's game.

However, I'd like to add that he's more defensively oriented, but his offensive game isn't too shabby. However, the last two seasons he's really fallen off compared to his 2010 form.

It's funny.. you read JJ's blog and he's talking about what a great bottom-6 centre Smith would be.. then you read Travis Yost's blog and he says Smith is likely better suited for wing.

Whatever the case may be, we better be getting more than just a solid bottom-6 player for Hjalmarsson.

Smith for 2nd/1st is fine if we sign Parise, Suter or get a Top6 player via trade (or a goalie for that matter).
Hjalmarsson for 4th, Smith and Carkner not so much

Call me old fashioned but for some reason I would prefer to actually sign someone first, rather than trade someone away and then just assume I can replace them with a free agent.

******** if true. Given that, and the fact that Murray is one of the 4 guys in Stan's rolodex, I think this has legs, like Octopus/Spider type of legs. New nickname for Bowman, the wrecking ball.

The only way I see this happening is if Stan signs Suter. Should be an interesting summer.

Yeah I agree, they can't trade Hammer off if Suter isn't coming here.

Trade Hammer , Sign Suter = Great but dont expect it
Trade Hammer , Sign Jackman or Allen = Ok can live with it got some assets and didn't weaken team
Trade Hammer , Do nothing , Promote Olsen = Ugh ,, Very risky
Trade Hammer , Sign another Oduya like dman = Stan needs to be fired

This to the moon and back. If Stan trades Hammer and signs Carkner instead, I'll be pissed. We would have too many number 5 d-men on the roster

Smith and a pick for Hammer isn't enough. I'd prefer another warm body coming back our way.

But there aren't a lot of Sens players or prospects that interest me outside of the untouchables.

Might as well see if we can add to get Lehner, but I highly doubt it.

Agree completely. I wouldn't mind if they signed Carkner as a 6th/7th defenseman

A better idea would have been.

Not sign Oduya sign Suter
Not sign Oduya sign Jackman or Allen
Not sign Oduya promote Olsen
Not sign Oduya = sign another smaller "puck moving" D-man who can't play in his own zone.
