Stuart agrees to 3 year contract with Sharks at $3.6 per. Takes less to sign with a team that's a good fit.

That's what I thought. There better not be an NMC. Otherwise we overpaid a bit.

I hoping for $3mil, was expecting around $3.2mil, but I guess it isn't that much more.

Sure, if by some miracle he didn't give him a NMC, good deal.

I almost think this is how the conversation went though:

Brad: So Doug, I'd really like to be a part of the team for a couple years, how about 2 at $3.5m

Doug: That's a little out of the range we were thinking about Brad.

Brad: Oh? Well what were you thinking?

Doug: We were thinking 3 years.

Brad: Oh! Well, that's fine, I might even be willing to knock of...

Doug: At $3.6m.

Brad: Erm... wait, what did you say?

Doug: FINE! AND a full NMC.

Brad: Right... hold on... did I miss something?

I don't know why you're all so surprised, this was going to happen.

When will the coaching staff stuff be announced?

I predict Brad Stuart will be the whipping boy next year when Sharks fans find out he's washed up and not what he once was. Should be making 3 mill TOPS. Wtg DW. Dude, what the hell are we paying Vlasic then???? He's better than Stuart defensively and can put up the same number of points offensively. Vlasic's getting 4.5 mill+ then.

Douglas Murray better be going because that's an expensive top 5. 5 d-men making 2.5 mill and above.

Note the above where I gave the range before the announcement.

They have agents. The agent won't let the client take that much less. The agent has Stuey looking ahead because his next contract, if he gets one, won't be for much. This is likely his last big contract and he has a family with which to be concerned. Look at what has happened to C. White and Hannan.

I am not in favor of the contract because with the style that Stuey plays, I expect him to fall off on performance very soon.

Sheesh, put down the pitchforks and douse the torches.

3.6 is about what I thought he would get even with a NMC.

Enough hyperbole. Its a slight overpayment for a player that makes us better. Its not Huskins or Wallin, huge over payments for players who made us worse.

dw had all the leverage in the universe and still couldn't get a cent knocked off the deal. for people going 'oh it's reasonable', reasonable doesn't win you cups. reasonable wins you reasonable teams that make the playoffs and do nothing later.

you know which GMs are known for fighting for every million and ensuring their roster is maxed out with talent? lombardi and holland and chiarelli. do you know what those guys have that we don't? a friggen cup!!

Exactly. If you overpay a player by 500k, you might not think it's a big deal but if you do that with 3-4 players, next thing you know, you used up 2 mill of capspace more than you had to and that money could be used for another 3rd liner.

Negotiating must be Doug's least favorite part of the job.

Also, Pavelski has the worst agent in the history of the NHL.

Red Wings fan here, coming in peace. I hope Stuart the best of luck in San Jose, he was warrior at times for the Wings, good player.

Anyway, I think the "discount" at $3.6 mil is referring to the fact that his last contract had him paid $3.75 mil for 4 years. So, he did take a slight pay decrease from his previous contract. At 32, he isn't exactly too old to where he would be expected to make significantly less money than his previous contract, I would think.

Compairing Stuart to Huskins or Wallin is just ridiculous.

dw's contract signings are absolutely nutty. all of his top tier signings im happy with, but when it comes to mediocre/marginal bottom pair bottom 6 talent (zeus, wallin, huskins, white, and now stuart), his signings are ridiculous. i just don't understand how he can get absolute studs like jt, pavs, couture, and burns to sign for so low while overpaying dime a dozen players with zero leverage like there's no tomorrow.
