Darcy hanging open for business sign

Quote:
The Sabres held a draft preview press conference today with general manager Darcy Regier and scouting director Kevin Devine, but much of the chatter at the 35-minute session was about Regier's theories on the trade market, both with his four draft picks in the top 44 and on potentially moving for NHL-level players to help his ninth-place-in-the-East club.
Quote:
"More calls have gone out than I've been receiving," Regier said. "But that doesn't mean it won't change. The tendency is for this thing to ramp up as you approach the draft and when you get on the floor, it gets a little crazier."

The Sabres appear bent on using their picks to acquire players and not to move up to a top-5 slot in a draft that has a lot of uncertainties because of players missing time in junior and because several of the top picks are Russian. The Sabres traditionally shy away from Russians and they're a big worry across the league because of the lure of big money from the KHL.
Quote:
The Sabres have not yet opened negotiations with restricted free agents Tyler Ennis and Patrick Kaleta
Quote:
The team has not closed the door on re-signing Jochen Hecht, who Regier says is now healthy after longterm concussion issues.
Quote:
And Regier said it's possible Armia could bypass Rochester and come directly to the NHL.

Said Regier: "Ability-wise and projecting him, he'll have to come to training camp but his talent and skill level would make it a possibility for him to play out of the gate."

As far as talks, Regier said they’ve pretty much been one way, “I have been more active meaning more calls going out than I’m receiving, but that doesn’t mean it won’t change. The tendency is for this thing to ramp up as you get closer and when you get on the floor and it gets a little crazier.

I think what’s really important for us organizationally and what we’re working on is the different possible scenarios and I’m trying to get as much stuff lined up as possible as to what may or may not be available and at what cost.

Then later in the week you do end up getting into decisions like should we consider doing this or are we going to draft all four, are we going to draft three?”
Reading the above doesn't help dispel those fears many fans have about how the Sabre players are viewed around the league compared to how they're viewed by Regier.

Quote:
Mark Pysyk likely will start in Rochester next season. Regier not looking for him on the big club right away.
Quote:
Last year’s number one pick Joel Armia will play in Finland next year, but Regier thinks when he gets here the next season, he has a good chance to play in Buffalo right away.
Quote:
Not looking good for Jochen Hecht and Brad Boyes to be back. Regier said both will likely hit the free agent market.
Quote:
Regier told me the NHL has not given him a salary cap figure for next year, but he’s operating under the $70.3-million figure.

Funny how Harrington's blog report suggests more optimism on both Hecht and Armia while Hamilton's report suggests more doubt.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Sabres general manager Darcy Regier has made it no secret that he's ready to play "Let's Make a Deal" at the NHL draft this weekend.

Regier revealed on Monday that he's already been "very active" in trade talks with several teams to gauge what deals might be available. Atop his wish list is adding a top-line forward to improve what had been a high-priced, underperforming team that failed to make the playoffs last season.

In exchange, Regier has said all but a few of his players are available.

If the cap really is 70.3, then let's give Zach Parise a blank check to come here.

In exchange, Regier has said all but a few of his players are available.

And those few would be.........?

Perhaps:

Myers
Miller
Ehrhoff
Ennis (even tho contract talks have not started yet)
Hodgson
Foligno?

Whoops, that's more than a few..........

The list of players Regier should be unwilling to deal should start and end with Myers.

I tend to agree with you. But I think losing Ennis would also be a mistake.

1000% correct.

On Ennis - if you can upgrade him, why not?

Trading Ennis would be like VAN trading Hodgson. Unfathomable on paper, but it CAN happen.

Pretty much this.

Obviously nobody wants to part with Hodgson, Ennis, Foligno, Pominville et al, but none of them are untouchable.

This reaffirms many of our suspicions that Regier is looking to make a huge splash this offseason. A core shakeup is en route.

i believe he WANTS to do some big things... I think his valuation of his own assets will end up getting in the way...

If we were entering any other offseason, I'd tend to agree with you.

I think Regier realizes how crucial this offseason is for him, though. This team has to be better. A lot better.

His job could be at stake (speculation on my part). If he stands pat/signs or trades for a third-liner, and the team still sucks, he could be fired at year's end.

There is no more "hoping" for the Rochester core to figure it out. Pegula wants results.

The fact that Darcy is calling teams more than getting calls tells me we will be very shocked at the player we end up with, i bet no one could even guess.

Y'all make a lot of good points........ it's just that Darcy used the word "few" versus "many" versus "couple" versus "none".

I am curious as to he thinks who are the mighty, the proud, the "few".

The "untouchables".

Myers obviously but it sounds like he has a longer list than we do. Hopefully, we'll find out over the next couple of weeks.

Sounds about right. Pominville probably barely makes that list, for Regier.

It is why I expect something major to go down, though. He can't settle for Stastny if Staal is available (I value Staal much higher than I do Stastny). Just an example.

I will say that I'd rather Regier stand pat than trade for Rick Nash.

AGREED

That would be the final nail, in the "he doesn't get it" coffin, for me (in regards to Regier)

Based on past comments by Regier, I think one could include Vanek and Pominville in the list. Likewise, Regehr won't be dealt one summer after the big PR fuss Black and Pegula made about his waiving of the NTC.

I'm with Jame on this - I'll believe it when I see it. Regier has often spoken of his ambitions in the past when pursuing personnel changes yet the closest he's ever come to a real "shake-up" trade were the Gratton / Gilmour deals at the deadline in 2000 and the Drury deal in the summer of 2003. Most of the rest were either for role players / specialists (i.e. Barnes, Hecht, Lydman, Zubrus); young and upcoming players yet to make a name for themselves (i.e. Warrener, Dumont, Briere, Hodgson); or chronic underachievers (i.e. Connolly, Pyatt, Boyes).

I have no doubt that Regier's desperately trying to get something done but I'm skeptical that whatever he accomplishes will be of the magnitude or caliber needed. I hope he proves me wrong.
