2013 UFA Defensemen:

(Weber)
Timonen
Streit
Visnovsky
Gonchar
Hainsey
Regehr
Zidlicky
Whitney
Enstrom
Hamrlik
Edler
Vlasic
Leopold
Lydman
I. White
Poti
Babchuk
Ference
Smid

Sign Carle this year, make a run at Schultz, and draft a defenseman. Go after Weber next year. Streit, Enstrom, Edler, Vlasic, and Smid interest me as well should they make it to market.

There's no reason to overpay Suter, and less reason to worry should we not get him.

Nearly all of them will be signed prior to free agency and the ones who aren't will be old.

However, Timonen was paired with Parent in the playoffs, and if my memory serves me correctly they did just fine. That's the difference that I'm talking about. He isn't capable of making up for his partner in the D zone. Remember last year's playoffs? He's a solid player, but that's it.
The Carle/BOurdon pairing did just fine also. Otherwise it wouldn't have been kept together for as long as it was. So he did indeed lead the pairign for a significant amount of time. Carle is absolutely capable of making up for a lesser player with his solid overall play. Especially at ES play. Carle is very good all around defenseman. Not elite or all star level. But very good.

You wouldn't want Carle to be the lead defenseman on a #1 pairing, as Carle isn't a #1 defenseman. But as a #2 compliment to a legitimate #1, or as a lead defenseman on a 2nd pairing. Carle is more then capable.

Carle is an average middle-pairing defenseman. He has deficiencies that will always prevent him from being a reliable top-pairing defenseman (though some of those can be overcome by playing with a superior player, e.g., Pronger).

I think some of the posters who are complaining about him need to look at the average #4 in the league, even among playoff teams. Given the lack of a clear better option, I don't see what all the fuss is about.

(All of this is premised on the 4.25 cap hit. If that number starts with a 5, this is a very different discussion).
Carle is a #2 NHL defenseman in my opinion. He has proven he can play as a compliment on a top pairing. And can play big minutes in all situations.

This is the year to set up lines for the kids to get more icetime(and assuming they sign Jags):

JVR-G-Voracek
Hartnell-Briere-Jagr
Schenn-Couts-Simmonds
Read-Talbot-Wellwood
Rinaldo

And I would only start the Briere line in the offensive zone!

Coburn Grossman
Timonen Mez
Carle-Bourdon
Gus

I would still try and get Schultz and look to trade a young F and a D(Mez)for a young D.

Almost guaranteed Jagr is, if they don't resign carle they either have inside track on something or believe in signing Shultz or believe that Gus and bourdon are ready

Odds are both will be back, especially Carle.

He has stated multiple times that he loves it here in Philly (says it's his 2nd home) and wants to get a deal done.

I think there is interest among both parties to get a deal done.

Both deals are apparently done. They'll be announced in a couple weeks.

Sorry to barge in but I have a Pronger roster question for you guys: any chance he plays next year? I'm a big fan from his Ducks days and was curious about his playing status.

I get that his cap hit doesn't count for you guys while on LTIR, but what if he has to retire? Is he on one of those dreaded over 35 contracts?

Thanks in advance.

(if I missed the answers to these questions in other threads I apologize)

Even if he was cleared to play, the smart thing to do for his future and family would be to not do so. Obviously it's up to him. I'd say his career is over, and he'll be on LTIR until his contract is up. If he retires, the Flyers are stuck with that cap hit from what I understand. So yes, 35+ contract.

Shelley back again b/c he is the clue and is great in the locker room
Jagr Gone. - money will be used to secure 4th line C and some goes to D
Carle - GONE, please - his money and some of Jagrs to Suter.

I am not sure why I have so much cap space left?

We could even drop a player from the F group - say wellwood or shelley or BOTH and sign Parise.... according to my calculations, if correct... ha! Or even go after the Shultz kid.

68.915 mil, 23 man roster.

If we do this, next year we have Kimmo, Lilja, Bob, and Shelley come off the books, giving us 9.92 mil in free cap space after the season. Simmonds, Wellwood, and Hartnell are up for raises, we better hope Hartnell takes a discount if he is to stay.

The following season, Giroux, Couturier, Read, and Schenn get raises. I suspect they let Mez go.

Really, the roster for this season (and to a lesser extent next season) will have a strong impact on what we can do in 2014-15, no matter how much the cap goes up.

Because we will experience minimal roster turnover over this time, we could be in trouble.

So Gaustad is going to take a paycut to play on the 4th line?

Hey **** butter - up the salary then.... look at the space I have (not sure if right) - plug in Dominic Moore for cheaper - at this point it's all speculation.

One thing is for certain on my roster - CARLE is not there, you like that?

I would like to add Garrison (assuming we don't add Suter or Weber)...maybe 3.5ish per year?

I hate the guy, but maybe Konopka? Would be nice to have a guy who can win faceoffs/kill penalties, plus it's time for couts to move up to the 3rd line, and Talbot seems better on the wing to me, so we need a 4th line center

Also, I love having the short-handed threat, but I hate Giroux killing penalties...wastes his energy, and it's a broken foot waiting to happen

I'd like to add Garrison too. Good size, has a great shot, and can give you a lot of minutes. Wouldn't be surprised if he got around 4 million though as there's not much out there besides Suter in UFA.

No, you do not want him. He couldn't stay on the ice with the Senators, he won't make it here. He was a healthy scratch for a good bunch of games. He can literally only take faceoffs anymore. That is about it

The great shot is something the Flyers sorely lack in the offensive zone. It's an over looked weakness I think. We have virtually no threat from the point which can create a bit of predictability at times. I'd really like to see them add a big shot defenseman with size like Garrison.

I agree, it needs to be addressed. I'm sick of seeing VanRiemsdyk and Voracek playing the point on the powerplay. Other than Meszaros no one on the backend was a real threat from the point.

And Meszaros wasn't even out there half the time when he was healthy.
