Probably should've added a poll. Which storyline will the Trib overhype and sensationalize for this July 1? "Staalwatch" would probably win in a landslide, though.

They'll probably try to play up the "#jagrwatch" angle again given how clueless they are.
edit: Also should we add Morrow to the WBS Penguins now since he's most likely going there?
NOTICE FROM THE JOES: They like threads that are organized and together like they are. That means they don't want to see no Staal jibba-jabba in here this time. We should be able to get this right by version 6 of a thread.

I know we're usually the ones in the position to ask players to take a cut to play with us but this summer, with a year separating us from Sid & Jordan's contracts, we should be willing to outbid almost anyone for Ray Whitney on a 1-year contract.

If he'll take one year, I absolutely agree. Pay the man.
Give the man a 2 year deal if he wants. Over the past 4 seasons he's missed only 9 games. 77 pts last year playing the full 82 games helps his case also. He still has some wheels, and obviously, durability.
2 years, $7 million. Why not? Kunitz-Crosby-Whitney would be such a hard line to play against.

3.5 a year would be cheap for him. 7 would be too much. particularly the 2nd year when Sid and Staal will likely be getting payed more.

Oh fine, be that way. I'm taking my ball and going home.
Far better ways to spend that kind of money IMO if you're trying to build a playoff contender. That guy is the opposite of a playoff gamer. And he fights like an 8 year old girl. It's just the principle of the thing.
I like both Semin and Whithey on one year deals, but neither on anything more than that. The difference with Semin, however, is aside from having great upside in general, given his age, he at least has the potential for more an extended future with the team if things went well for him here. Whitney has been great, but he is bound to decline very soon.

Whitney is coming of a season where he almost potted 80 points and he has missed a total of 9 games the last four seasons.
For comparison's sake, Selanne is two years older, almost hit 70 points this year and may play another season.
I doubt Whitney is bound to decline that badly in the next two years, which is probably the term he will be looking for.
Semin on the other hand is one of the softest players I have ever seen and I would take Whitney, at his declining age, over Semin, 100 times out of 100 without a moment's hesitation.
I can see things heating up in the next week or two with our players that are going to be going through UFA or RFA status. How's WBS shaping?
Shrimper:
I have posted several of my best guess ideas on the Penguins' prospects thread, but since I am no expert, they are at best educated guesses. Here is an attempt at one for you.
Ideally we should target another Kunitz type winger who can bang as the third wheel. I don't see Whitney and Semin as that kind of player.
Pens were soft with Sullivan, and these two would be upgrades, but at a much higher cost while still being soft.
Lets look for warriors in your face battlers.
Ideally we should target two wingers. One of them should be the third wheel banger type. The other can be whatever the hell we want imo, just as long as its an upgrade.

Rumor on the trade board that Cal Clutterbuck and Devin Setoguchi might be available, I think both would be a great fit for the Pens.
Tangradi gets the top 6 spot if he earns it out of camp, he would save us cap space instead of acquiring another top 6 winger. IMO, with that top 6, you don't need every winger to be great, we can afford to give Tangradi those minutes with Malkin and Neal and not lose a beat.

i like it, but i'd like it a lot more with dupuis and tk in there too

What do you have us sending them? Martin, Dupuis and TK?
I still don't want Tangradi in the top 6 unless we have to. Make another deal to fill that spot and send Asham or Adams packing. I don't get why we care about saving cap space. We have cap space. At least if Martin gets traded.
I don't really mind that move, but I would still try to make another one for that LW. I'd rather play Tangradi with Staal. Drop Cooke down a line and get rid of one of Adams or Asham. Make them the 13th forward at least.

I assume they would be a part of the trade in his scenario.
