To Minnesota:
Luke Schenn

To Toronto:
Niklas Backstrom

Minnesota gets a a good defenseman to help fill out their defense. Toronto gets a solid starting goaltender for the season to help groom their young ones but with a high cap hit.

The Wild would have to give more; like maybe their 1st rounder this week +

That would work. Although Clutterbuck is someone I'd love to have, the pick is worth more to the Leafs at this time.

OK, it's settled. Backstrom, the 9th overall, and Clutterbuck for the magnificant Luke Schenn. Deal? Deal.

I would do Clutterbuck/Backstrom for Schenn and a flop of first round picks. The Wild pick 5th and Toronto 7th.

Good deal. Although it would be hard to give up Schenn, I think Backstrom would provide adequate goaltending for the next 2-3 years, or at least better than what we've become accustomed to in Toronto...

Am I the only one that thinks the Leafs would have to add?

I would think so. Backstrom is 34 years old, making $6.0/year and is a UFA in one year. You aren't going to get much more value than a one-for-one deal for Luke Schenn.

Heck, Minnesota would probably have to add.

Mmmm, that might still be workable. Clutterbuck, Backstrom 7th for Schenn, 5th and a 3rd rounder?

I like it. Think the value is actually pretty close.

Of course you aren't. Schenn is a bottom pairing D, who can be solid, but can also be an adventure. Backstrom is a legit #1 goalie in the NHL - there aren't many of those.

Depends, if the Wild wants to get something for Backstrom and move forward with Harding, they should jump on this. If all their plans have Backstrom as their starter though, that's gonna cost to change. I don't think that anyone has to add much for mere value reasons, but the Wild hold all the cards here.

I would do it if toronto is targetting a player at #7. otherwise I would rather include assets to avoid giving up the #5. We need bluechip prospects and could get someone really nice at #5. Much rather just do backstrom+2nd for schenn and I love clutterbuck.

Leafs aren't trading a 22-year-old defenseman for an overpaid 34-year-old goalie who will skip town in a year.

Not necessarily. Dealing Backstrom would screw up Hackett's development in Houston. Not to mention Harding is injury-prone. The thought of possibly having Hackett starting for a majority of the Wild's season makes me a little queasy.

I would be pissed if we traded down, especially if one of the two centers are on the board still.

What about this? (If Forsberg and Galchenyuk are gone by the time the Leafs pick)

5th overall
Franson(signed)

for

7th overall
Backstrom
3rd

Leafs get their goalie, pick one of Grigs, Teravainen, Faksa, or a D, get to pick in the 3rd round. Wild pick one of Murray, Dumba, Reinhart, get cap relief, get cheap help on D. Or am I way off track?

Wouldn't the Wild get one of those players picking at 7th anyways?

why would the leafs move down 2 spots for a goalie who could walk away as UFA in a year?

Maybe, maybe not. At 5th they're guaranteed to have the choice between 2 of them though(most likely Dumba&Reinhart) if both Gally and Forsberg go in the top 4.

Well if Burke is targeting Forsberg and Galchenyuk and they're gone, why not? After those guys the forward they might be eyeing at 5th will probably be available at 7th. They fix their goalie problem instantly for next year at least. Sprinkle a little bit of desperation from Burke to save his job and it could happen.
