Somewhere in Sweden, Oliver Ekman-Larsson is celebrating.
Any other young top tier defensemen going to use this contract as a starting point in their next negotiations? Petro? Subban? Hedman?
This is not a very smart comment. Karlsson's contract hasn't simply set the precedent for all other top young defensemen. Karlsson got 78 points this past season, the 2nd highest point total of any defenseman post-lockout. THAT is why he is getting paid what he is, on top of being very good defensively of course.
Solid deal for both sides. Karlsson wants to be in Ottawa long term, the Sens want him there long term, so 7 years works. $6.5 mil is a solid salary, but not at all a franchise crippling salary, fair for both parties. Just a good signing all around.
People are still stuck in 2005. When third liners start getting $4 million, I think it's reasonable that your #1 defenseman gets $6.5 million. He wasn't just a #1 on one team, but he made headlines throughout the league for what he did at the age of 21.
