Unless you previously traded with Nashville, Ottawa actually traded with Nashville for the 15th Overall Pick. The deal turned into:

Erik Karlsson for Chet Pickard and Taylor Beck.

Now you see the difference between rumors and a signed deal.

Dead on with the money... but fair? Time will tell but could be a great deal.

Time to reassess your view of the Sens.

From fair to an amazing deal... I hope we get 5 great years out of it.

You need a new crystal ball.

Your crystal ball is made of glass apparently.

Must you have lost a bet.

Was there a sale on them "Made in China" crystal balls?

Dollarama is now sold out of crystal balls.

K for Karlsson... not Kovalchuck

At 6 mil... does that make him an econo stud?

Precisely inaccurate.

We have our winner!..... and not a moment too soon!
I think you need a new pair of eyes

We bought into his RFA contract, that's a lot different than giving him 6.5 for one year.

This is not a very smart comment. Karlsson's contract hasn't simply set the precedent for all other top young defensemen. Karlsson got 78 points this past season, the 2nd highest point total of any defenseman post-lockout. THAT is why he is getting paid what he is, on top of being very good defensively of course.

If he was UFA that would have been closer to 8 million and maybe even 9.

Woah, that's a huge contract. If Karlsson keeps going the way he has been, this is a great deal. Good for the Sens.

As somebody who has had the pleasure of watching him play against my favorite team. I beg to differ.

I was pumping this guy's tires before this season, his offensive talent is just unreal, he has more offensive skill than any Sabres forward.

But he's a below average defender. Obviously he can and will improve and it's easily worth the tradeoff, but when he's on the ice the # of chances generated for both teams goes up.

Seems like a reasonable amount to spend on a #1 d-man for the next 7 years.

This Sens fan didn't really care how much it was as long as it got done. Less than $7/per looks pretty good to me. Very happy he's locked in and we can only hope that he continues to develop.

Solid deal for both sides. Karlsson wants to be in Ottawa long term, the Sens want him there long term, so 7 years works. $6.5 mil is a solid salary, but not at all a franchise crippling salary, fair for both parties. Just a good signing all around.

Good deal, maybe the Pens can sign Letang for $5.8M when he needs an extension.

People are still stuck in 2005. When third liners start getting $4 million, I think it's reasonable that your #1 defenseman gets $6.5 million. He wasn't just a #1 on one team, but he made headlines throughout the league for what he did at the age of 21.

As a leafs fan I'm hoping he tanks and becomes the next Gomez/Redden monster contract... but that clearly won't happen. I'm happy for Ottawa, this is a solid signing.

Well there's still the Doughty, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester contracts out there. He could argue for 6-7.
