Great job by Bryan Murray! (again)

Karlsson is played to his strenghts on the PP. He's an offensive d-man with defensive skills. I don't see why he'd play on PK if he's better 5 on 5 and PP. Just cuz he barely plays it, doesn't mean he can't.

I mean, Karlsson obviosuly outscored Chara on the PP....but he also lead the league in points by a defenseman on 5 on 5. AKA, he's not a PP specialist and can dominate 5 on 5.

By the same token, Karlsson played more TOI/G than Chara as well. Obviously, they play a different style and I don't really like comparing the two. It's only because it gets brought up he's not a #1 that it comes up.

As for your first line. There is without a doubt in most of the hockey world karlsson played like a #1 D-man. Actually, he played like a franchise d-man this year. Me saying a reasonable discussion is whether he could sustain that level of offensive production isn't really out of the box thinking. It's really a discussion many would discuss.

The other aspect that people are ignoring is that he's EXCITING TO WATCH.

Hockey, ultimately, is about entertainment, and he's probably one of the top 3 most exciting players to watch on the ice.

So the Senators have a guy to market for the next 7 years.

Lots of ways to make the money back.

People who are calling his minutes "sheltered" simply don't have a clue. He played an absurd amount at even-strength and was out there for entire PPs. If he had played SH, he would have led the league in icetime.

He will get more PK time as the veterans begin to retire on the Sens blueline and all this talk will disappear.

True, if by top 3 you mean on the Sens. He certainly isn't top 3 in the NHL. Not in my books anyway... but you make a good point about the marketing optics. It does give the Sens something to build on with the public.

I'd call it a fair deal. Dynamic offensively, average defensively, puts him among the higher paid Dmen which is where his game ranks. Good job by the Sens getting a long-term deal done.

He's top 1 on the Senators.

It's not even close.

No one comes close to him in terms of excitement in franchise history.

He does things that quite simply boggle the mind.

It could really blow up in ottawa's face. I personally don't like the term if it was my team, but that's the contracts these days.

The fact remains that while 6.5 is a great deal, it's an outstanding deal when you consider the fact that we had to sign him.

He is the face of the franchise, our best player, the most exciting player Ottawa has ever had, and has crazy marketing potential and hair.

He could have asked for 7.5 and been stubborn until he got his way - but rest assured he would have got his way. We just can't afford to let him leave.

Glad to see he showed some class and wants the organization to succeed.

It could, like all long-term contracts.

For young guys, you worry that they are over-reaching too early, or of a career ending injury. For older guys, you're worried that they've already peaked. It's always a risk.

They are gambling, but I guess they like what they see so far.

I've already said I like Karlsson several times. There is no offensive defenseman I would take before him. In terms of who I'd have on the ice to protect a 1 goal lead in the playoffs, I can think of many true #1's before him at this point. No one is saying he will not be a #1... as you so valiantly stated, he is only 21 and has many years to perfect his game.
He's more than capable of playing on the PK. He's done it before. But he doesn't regularly get minutes because Paul MacLean knows better to waste the minutes in an area that can be filled by other D-men on the team. No one else can create offense on the team's back end like Karlsson. It's not even close.

If people want to see more seasons of this kind of play, then alright. I feel that people believe his first season was a 10 point, get coned every game, kind of season. Erik Karlsson is something special and he's being under-rated in his own end, IMO.

I believe he's played well-above what is expected from an average #1 this past season and I don't see him pulling a Mike Green with the tools he has in comparison to a player such as Mike Green.

He was a must-signing.

I was expecting 7 million, so I'm happy.

Statistically, he certainly could have asked for it.

Considering this price, do you REALLY think Suter and/or Weber will get any more than this? I know this might be a hometown discount, but still.

Thrilled with this deal. Great term, good cap hit. Nice that it is done early and it doesn't drag through the summer.

On the open market, they could easily get 8+.

I bet Karlsson could have gotten 7.5+ as an RFA/UFA.

Well, with the term, maybe not. 1 good year but it's not easy to put up those points. As long as he stays a 60-65 point guy, it's good.

Good for the Sens to lock him down. Personally, though, that is insane money to give to a kid who still has a chance to average out. 1 awesome year and 1 good one does not equal a 7 year 6.5 mil contract in my books. As a Blues fan, I'm assuming this contract is what Petro will look at when negotiating a longer deal so ******* you Murray.

I'm pretty much with you. It is a lot of money to give a kid that doesn't have a lot of time put in. I like the player and think if he can stay consistent it is a fair deal but none of us know it he is a consistent player or not. He's played less then a handful of NHL seasons.

If this is what a young kid gets then what the heck are Weber and Suter looking at? I'm almost afraid to think about it.

Wait - 6.5 million dollars for a 45 and 78 point player?

Who cares what position he is technically - when you have a PPG player at 21/22 years old in your organization, you lock him up, period.

Quite happy with this. Honestly thought it would cost at least $7m to get him locked up for more than 3-4 years after the ridiculous season he just had.
