Good for the Sens to lock him down. Personally, though, that is insane money to give to a kid who still has a chance to average out. 1 awesome year and 1 good one does not equal a 7 year 6.5 mil contract in my books. As a Blues fan, I'm assuming this contract is what Petro will look at when negotiating a longer deal so ******* you Murray.
I guess it's a fair deal. Not a great deal, not a bad one either. The Sens HAVE to pay him, they have no choice. If I were a Sens fan, I would be a bit worried though. EK had an amazing season, but that only means very high expectations for the next season. A contract like this only increases those expectations. Expectations that are very difficult to meet. Best case scenario, Ek continues to be a 60+ pt player, so its a fair deal. On the other hand, he is a young player, and could very easily regress.
- Special teams play of more than 1 minute per game
-True shut down play
- 3+ Norris Nominations
- 1+ Norris Winner
- 3+ ASG appearances
- More than 3 years of consistent play that is top 10 league wide in all categories.
It's funny you list Doughty as a true #1 dman when he doesn't even have all your qualifications that you just presented.
I'm sorry, I like the Sens, and Karlsson.... but really?
First two points indicate nothing about being #1 defenseman. The bolded is opinion. Italicized is more a set of irrelevant points (age, 21? That means nothing! Been in the ASG? An ASG for OFFENSE? Hosted in OTTAWA?! And who wouldn't be 'nominated' for Norris with those point totals? Doesn't mean he has a chance of winning...).
You will have to do far better than that list full of empty BS (what, are we writing a college essay?). I do not believe he is a #1 at all yet. Top 4, yes. Elite offensively with limitless potential? For sure... a true #1 now (not just serving as that)? Nope. Not yet.
I really wouldn't care at all but the defensiveness and blind homerism sometimes....
So on what basis can you definitively say that he is NOT a #1 defenceman?
