Martin was still one of Pittsburgh's better defenders all year long. I personally don't know why he got so much hate. I guess it's because he doesn't put up the numbers he used to put up because he was NJD's first PP unit option while he was there. He isn't nearly as bad defensively as Pittsburgh fans seem to think he is.

During the playoffs (which is when most people watched Pittsburgh this year) Letang was much worse but people have pretty much forgotten about that performance and now blame Martin for the bad playoffs even. It's just a matter of every team needs a whipping boy and most people (even on a hockey board) don't actually understand hockey. This kind of a pick up would definitely ease the transition away from Lidstrom and losing Stuart.

If we're going to ship away Jurco, it's going to be in a package for someone much better than Paul Martin. Thanks but no thanks.

So you'd like to give away this team's best forward prospect for a $5 mil/yr whipping boy?

Why, to make Ericsson feel better?

This would be a huge mistake. Taking him for free would be a huge mistake at that cap hit, when there are many UFAs available who are much better and would be cheaper.

Maybe on reentry waivers with half the cap hit. Maybe.

He would be arguably the best defenceman on the Wings. Don't fall into the trap of "I read Pittsburgh fans say that this guy sucks". 5M for Paul Martin is pretty fair value. He would be one of the top defensemen of this seasons UFA crop. You could easily convince me he would be #2 right behind Suter.

He was one of their top defencemen, arguably top 2 and no worse than 3rd best on that team. He brings a similar skilset to Kronwall, without the open ice hits but with a more technically sound defensive game (even though you might have read that he sucks defensively or whatnot). In all honesty, he plays a style similar to Lidstrom with some dumb reads and passes mixed in.

Jurcos hands are almost as good as Datsyuks.
Martin is a no talent clown of a Mike Commodore.

I wouldn't trade a bag of Doritos & a Chocolate Yoohoo for that piece of trash Martin.

If you think Martin is trash, then you also think Dan Bylsma is an idiot.

Because Bylsma plays the guy a ton, in all situations.

TOI:
Martin... 23:00
Letang... 24:50 (1:50 more than Martin)
PP TOI:
Martin... 1:49
Letang... 4:21 (2:32 more than Martin)

So either Martin is pretty good and relied upon heavily EV, PK, and PP... or he's overpaid garbage but Bylsma can't see what HFBoards has their finger on. And I know since the 2012 playoffs everybody is "LOL PITTS DEFENSE?!" but before that series they've been one of the better defensive units in the league... despite Fleury's attempts to prove otherwise.
